Field Hockey Defeats Conn. College
October 2, 2011
Middlebury outshot Connecticut College 32-8 on its way to a 3-1 win over the Camels (4-4, 1-4) on Kohn Field. The 12th-ranked Panthers (5-2, 4-2) return to action on Tuesday night at Castleton State.
The only goal of the first half came from Hannah Clarke, as she scored her second of the year at the 26:08 mark. Lauren Greer had the ball down low, lifting a pass over the stacked goalie pads of Becca Napolitano to Clarke, who finished for the 1-0 lead.
The Panthers made it a 2-0 game 7:08 into the second half with a goal on a penalty corner. Lucy Jackson inserted the ball to Greer, who ripped home a shot into the bottom right corner.
Middlebury had a nice chance later in the half when a ball sent in by Jackson just missed getting tipped into the cage. The Camels had an opportunity of their own when Kat Barker made a nice feed to KK Logan, but Panther goalkeeper Becca Shaw made the save.
Connecticut College got right back in the game at the 57:04 mark, tying the game with a goal following a penalty corner. After Shaw had made one save, Laura Sanderson gathered the rebound and lifted a shot over her stacked pads to make it a 2-1 contest.
The Camels kept up the pressure, but Middlebury was able to seal the game with 30 seconds remaining with an insurance goal. Clarke made a nice feed from down low on the left side to Greer, who redirected the pass into the net for her 11th of the season.
Shaw finished the game with five saves to earn the win, while Napolitano made 19 stops for the Camels.
