Middlebury

Field Hockey Headed To NCAA Quarters

November 12, 2011

Lauren Greer had a pair of goals to lead Middlebury to a 2-1 victory over Franklin & Marshall in an NCAA Regional at Skidmore College. The Panthers improve to 15-3 and will face Amherst, a 2-0 winner over Skidmore, in the NCAA quarterfinals on Sunday at 1 p.m.  The Jeffs were a 3-1 winner over Middlebury on September 18th, with the Panthers returning the favor with a 2-1 overtime victory in the NESCAC semifinals last weekend.

Greer, the nation's top scorer, put Middlebury in front early. She took a pass from Lucy Jackson off a penalty corner, found an opening in the center of the circle, and slammed the ball home to make it 1-0 at the 2:34 mark.

Franklin & Marshall answered right back at 4:23 when Becky Willert tied it up with her 29th goal of the season. Willert deflected a centering pass from Maura Hennigan that beat Middlebury goalie Becca Shaw.

Neither team was able to find an offensive rhythm for the rest of the first half, leaving the teams tied 1-1 at the break.

In the second half, both teams were attacking offensively, but were unable to score.

A Diplomats yellow card at 57:07, gave the Panthers a 5:00 one-player advantage. The Panthers capitalized at 60:40 when Catherine Fowler centered a pass to Greer who found the back of the cage for the eventual game-winning goal, her 33rd of the season.

Franklin & Marshall was able to earn several corners late, but could not take advantage as Middlebury hung on for the 2-1 win.

Shaw finished with two saves, while Avery Koep made five stops for the Diplomats.

The Panthers outshot Franklin & Marshall 9-7, while the Diplomats held a 15-7 advantage in penalty corners.
