October 18, 2003

LEWISTON, Maine - Mike Keenan threw for 256 yards with three touchdown passes as Middlebury improved to 2-3 with a 21-13 win at Bates. The Panthers will host 5-0 Trinity next Saturday on homecoming weekend at 12:30 p.m.

Bates scored on its opening drive of the game as a 14-yard rush gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead. Early in the second quarter, the Bobcats increased their lead with a 22-yard field goal to make it a 10-0 game. The teams exchanged four punts before Middlebury got on the board with 6:54 left in the half as Mike Keenan found Charley Howe for a two-yard touchdown pass. Bates was driving late in the half, but an interception by Cam Brooks stymied the drive at the Middlebury 30.

On their first drive of the second half, the Panthers put together a quick five play, 66-yard drive following a short kickoff. Three pass completions over more than 15 yards moved Middlebury down the field quickly as Mike Murray caught a 28-yarder for the touchdown. Middlebury held the 14-10 lead until Bates kicked a field goal on its next possession to cut the lead to 14-13 with 7:45 left in the third quarter. On their next possession, Middlebury scored on another 66-yard drive as Keenan found Matt Wolf three times on the drive for 36 yards, including a seven-yard scoring strike. The lead grew to 21-13, which is where it would stay for the remainder of the game.

Keenan ended the day 17 of 33, while Eric Shanley rushed 17 times for 76 yards. Tom Cleaver had another big day with five catches for 99 yards, while Brooks had two interceptions on the day. Phil Reiff (11 tackles) and Richard Decembrele (10 tackles), led the defense.
