Football Team Thumps Bates

10/22/05 - Middlebury picked up its first win of they season as they handed Bates a 41-7 loss in <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Maine. The Panthers rushed for 182 yards on the day, led by Stefan Hrdina's 100-yard effort on 25 carries.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Middlebury scored on its opening drive as Tiger Lyon connected with Ryan Armstrong for a 21-yard scoring strike at the 10:01 mark of the first quarter. Bates answered late in the quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at seven.

Hrdina capped off a 66-yard drive at the 9:29 mark of the second quarter, with an 18-yard scamper to make it a 13-7 game after a blocked extra point. Lyon found Armstrong for the second time in the half, this time from 27 yards out to give Middlebury a 20-7 lead at the half.

The defense chipped in on the scoring in the second half, as Scott Secor picked off the first of his two interceptions on the day, returning it 49 yards for the touchdown. Lyon scored on a two-yard rush later in the quarter before he found Charles Holm from two yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it a 41-7 final.

Lyon ended the day completing 13 of 17 passes for 185 yards with three scoring strikes. Armstrong led the Middlebury receivers with five receptions for 77 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Dom DiDomenico complimented Hrdina's 100-yard day on the ground with 50 yards of his own. Eric Woodring led the defense with eight tackles, Coleman Hutzler added seven, while Secor had five to go along with his pair of picks and a sack.
