Football Players Earn Academic Honors

Middlebury College football players Chris Dola (Arlington, Va.) and Matt Wassel (Rumson, N.J.) have been named District I First-Team Academic All-Americans by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). The pair helped the Panthers win three of their last four games to finish at 4-4 in ’11.

Dola is an economics major at Middlebury with a 3.50 GPA. He was a multiple-year starter on the defensive line, finishing sixth on the team this season with 38 tackles. Dola led the team with eight tackles for lost yardage in ’11, two of them coming via sack. He earned a season-high seven tackles at Amherst on October 8th, earning four or more tackles five times this season. Dola ends his career with 93 tackles, 25 TFL’s and 12.5 sacks.

Wassel is majoring in psychology at Middlebury, owning a 3.43 GPA. He served as the team’s punter during his rookie and senior seasons, averaging 33.5 yards/boot over his career. This year, Wassel became a major contributor among a talented group of wide receivers. He finished the season with 30 catches for 289 yards with one touchdown coming against Hamilton. Wassel caught nine balls for 63 yards at Amherst on October 8th, while pulling down eight receptions for 88 yards in the season finale at Tufts on November 12th.
