Rudin Earns NESCAC Rookie of the Year Honors

Middlebury College men’s basketball player Ben Rudin (Scarsdale, N.Y.) has been named the NESCAC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year for the ’05-’06 season. Rudin helped lead the Panthers to a 7-0 start this season for the first time since the inaugural year of the program in 1917-18.

Kris Gibbs-Smith scored 33 points on 13 of 16 shooting to lead visiting Plattsburgh to an 86-76 win over Middlebury. The Panthers return to action this weekend when they travel to Bowdoin and Colby to wrap up the regular season.

Men's Basketball Loses To Amherst

Tenth-ranked Amherst pulled away from Middlebury in the first half to win 86-78 at Pepin Gym this afternoon. Both teams shot above 50 percent from the floor, but the Jeffs controlled the backboards garnering a 40-29 advantage in rebounds. Amherst improves to 19-2, (6-1 NESCAC) as Middlebury falls to 12-9 (1-6). The Panthers return to action for their final home regular season game against Plattsburgh Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m.

Trinity Tops Men's Basketball

Trinity’s Tyler Rhoten, the NESCAC’s leading scorer, helped the Bantams fend off a Middlebury surge late in the second half to preserve a 79-68 win at Pepin Gym. The Panthers will look to bounce back tomorrow against fifth-ranked Amherst tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Pepin Gym while the Bantams head to Williams on Saturday.

The Middlebury men's basketball team suffered a 65-61 NESCAC road loss at Williams on Saturday. The Panthers shot just .324 from the floor and 4 of 20 from behind the arc, but were in the game until the final buzzer.

Middlebury had little trouble at Green Mountain as they handed the winless Eagles a 94-37 defeat. The Panthers closed the first half on a 20-2 run to take a 54-20 lead into the intermission.

12/10/05 - Middlebury saw its seven-game winning streak to start the season come to an end as they fell to Hamilton (7-0), 92-84. The game was played before a crowd of 825 fans at the Pepin Gym, that saw the Panthers end their semester at 7-1.

12/8/05 - Middlebury tied the school record for its best ever start as they moved to 7-0 with a convincing 81-57 win at Johnson State. The seven straight wins to open the season equal the effort of the 1917-18 squad, which finished the season at 7-0. The Panther will try to break the mark when they host undefeated Hamilton on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

11/29/05 - Middlebury placed five players in double figures with an 88-63 win over Castleton State in the Pepin Gym. The Panthers broke open a tight game in the second half with a 21-1 run to take a commanding 62-39 lead with 11:58 remaining. Middlebury shot well from the floor, connecting on .516 percent of its shots, while forcing 23 Castleton turnovers.

11/27/05 - Middlebury’s Mike Walsh scored in the paint with 35 seconds remaining, giving Middlebury a 68-66 lead over St. Lawrence which they would not relinquish. The Panthers move to 2-0 on the season, while the Saints fall to 1-3.

Men's Basketball Wins Season-Opener

11/22/05 - Middlebury won its season-opener as they earned a 74-57 win at St. Joseph's of Vermont. The Panthers opened the game on a 15-2 run, sparked by seven points from Evan Thompson. St. Joseph's hung tough and trailed 34-23 at the half. Middlebury extended its lead to 13 in the second half before a 7-2 run cut the lead to six with 11:04 left to play. The Panthers slowly increased their lead, leading by 10 or more for the remainder of the game.
