Keenan, Cleaver and Decembrele Earn ECAC Honors

1/3/05 - Middlebury College football players Mike Keenan (Rutland, Vt.), Tom Cleaver (Severna Park, Md.) and Rich Decembrele (Walpole, Mass.) were all recently first-team selections to the ECAC Northeast All-Star team. The threesome led the Panthers to a strong 3-1 finish and a 4-4 overall record in ’04.

Cleaver Wins National Scholarship

11/29/04 - The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame has announced its 2004 National Scholar-Athlete Class of 15, which this year includes student-athletes from all NCAA divisions, I-A, I-AA, II, and III.  Middlebury College football player Tom Cleaver (Severna Park, Md.) was one of three Division III athletes to earn the scholarship.

Seven Football Players Garner NESCAC Honors

11/22/04 - Seven members of the Middlebury College football team were named to the All-NESCAC team. Seniors Mike Keenan (Rutland, Vt.), Tom Cleaver (Severna Park, Md.) and Rich Decembrele (Walpole, Mass.) were named to the first team, while senior Bryan Lodigiani (St. Petersburg, Fla.), junior Coleman Hutzler (Las Vegas, Nev.),  and sophomores Kevin Ryan (Shelton, Conn.) and Steve Hauschka (Needham, Mass.) were all second-team selections. The group helped lead the Panthers to a strong 3-1 finish and a 4-4 overall record in ’04.

Football Ends Season With Win Over Tufts

11/13/04 - Middlebury finished 4-4 for the fourth straight season as they picked up a 10-6 win over Tufts (2-6) in the season finale for both teams. The Panther defense held Tufts to -8 yards rushing on 31 carries on the afternoon, while the Jumbos held the Panthers to nine yards on 31 carries.

Hutzler Earns Player Of The Week Honors

11/8/04 - Middlebury College football player Coleman Hutzler (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been named the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week.

The junior linebacker had a big week on defense for Middlebury as they defeated Hamilton, 29-13. Hutzler ended the game with 19 total tackles, three of them coming for lost yardage. He also had a sack and a blocked punt, where he was credited with a safety. He now leads the team with 66 tackles and three sacks on the season.

Keenan And Cleaver Set Career Marks As Middlebury Tops Hamilton

11/6/04 - The Middlebury College football team will have a shot at its sixth consecutive season at .500 or better after a 29-13 win over Hamilton. In the game, Middlebury’s Mike Keenan became the school’s all-time leader in passing yards with 4,338, surpassing Brian Coates’ total of 4,135 from ’95-’98. He also broke his own single-season completion record of 136 last season, with 137 through seven games in ’04. With his two touchdown passes, Keenan tied the school’s all-time record of 37 held by Peter Mackey from ’71-’73. Wide receiver Tom Cleaver became the school’s all-time leader in receiving yards with 1,846. He surpasses Denver Smith who accumulated 1,760 from ’99-’02.

Football Team Falls At Trinity

12/30/04 - The Middlebury College football team fell to 2-4 on the season with a respectable 28-7 loss at Trinity, the top-ranked team in New England. The Bantams had given up just five touchdowns in five games and only 6.4 points/game entering the contest.

Keenan And Cleaver Earn Conference Honors

10/25/04 - Middlebury College football players Mike Keenan (Rutland, Vt.) and Tom Cleaver (Severna Park, Md.) have been named the NESCAC Co-Offensive Football Players of the Week. The duo helped lead Middlebury to a 42-31 win over Bates this past Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Football Breaks School Marks As Panthers Top Bates

10/23/04 - Middlebury accumulated its third highest offensive output in school history with 570 yards of total offense as the Panthers (2-3) defeated Bates (1-4), 42-31 on Alumni Field. Middlebury quarterback Mike Keenan broke school records for most completions in a game (31), most yards passing (427) and most total offense (433). His top target, Tom Cleaver, tied a school record with 15 receptions and broke a school mark with 256 yards receiving.

Missed Extra-Point Costs Football Team

10/16/04 - The Middlebury College football team lost its third straight game as they fell by a score of 17-16 at Williams on Saturday. The Panthers expected to tie the game mid-way through the fourth quarter on a touchdown, but a bad snap led to a blocked extra-point and a one point loss.

Football Team Falls To Amherst

10/9/04 - Amherst’s Fletcher Ladd rushed for 284 yards on 35 carries with a pair of touchdowns to lead Amherst (3-0) past Middlebury (1-2), 34-26. The Jeffs gained 450 yards of offense on the day, including 368 on the ground.

Cleaver To Be Featured On NESN

10/7/04 - Middlebury College football player Tom Cleaver (Severna Park, Md.) will be featured on NESN SportsDesk. The segment will run on the October 7th evening edition of SportsDesk and repeatedly on Friday morning, from 6:00-9:00 a.m.

Football Team Falls At Colby

10/2/04 - The Middlebury College football team fell to 1-1 on the season as the Panthers were defeated 23-6 at Colby. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday the 9th when they host Amherst at 1:30 p.m.

Football Team Opens Season With A Win

9/25/04 - The Middlebury College football team took advantage of six Bowdoin College turnovers and posted a 31-17 victory on Saturday. The Panthers have won seven straight series meetings, and improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Polar Bears fall to 0-1.

Cleaver Wins ECAC Award

9/21/04 - The Commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Phil Buttafuoco, has announced the recipients of the 2004 ECAC Award of Valor. The recipients, Rebecca Gutwin of William Smith College and Tom Cleaver (Severna Park, Md.) of Middlebury College, will be presented with the Award of Valor during the ECAC Fall Convention Honors Dinner presented by Jostens on Sunday, September 26 at the Four Points by Sheraton Hyannis Resort.
