The Middlebury College men’s golf team won its second NESCAC Championship with a dramatic come-from-behind victory at Bowdoin. With the win, Middlebury has qualified for the 2007 NCAA Championships on May 15-18 at the Prairie View Golf Club and Hawthorns Golf and Country Club Carmel and Fishers, Indiana.
The Panthers were in a sixth place tie with the host school with a total of 318 after day one. Williams led the tourney with a 609, followed by Tufts with 310 and Trinity with 312. Middlebury turned up the heat on the second day, with three players shooting 74 on the second day.
Trinity and Middlebury finished in a tie at the end of the tournament, each shooting a 618, followed by Williams in third (625) and Hamilton in fourth (627). The tie-breaker came down to the fifth player’s scorecard on day two, with Middlebury sophomore Michael McCormick (Oak Park, Ill.) shooting an 81 to top his opponent from Trinity, who shot 84 on the day.
Sophomore Harrison Bane (Marblehead, Mass.) finished second at the championship match for the second straight year, shooting a 148, just one stroke off the pace. Junior George Baumann (Mequon, Wis.) finished the tourney with a 154 tying him for fifth place, while senior Chad Bellmare (Bedford, N.Y.) shot a 158. McCormick shot a 161, while senior Jay Yonamine (Eden Praire, Minn.) finished with a 166.
