2009 NESCAC Champions

Middlebury won its third NESCAC Men’s Golf Championship as the Panthers topped Trinity via tie-breaker to capture the ’09 crown. The Panthers last won the title in ’06, also earning NESCAC Championship honors in ’99. With the title, Middlebury will make its second trip to the NCAA Tournament coming up in May. The Championship event took place at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course on the campus of Middlebury College.

Trailing by seven strokes and in fourth place after day one, Middlebury came back strong on the second day of competition, firing a team total of 300 to finish with a two-day total of 613. Trinity, who trailed tournament leader Williams by two strokes after day one, shot a 305 to also finish with a 613. The championship tie-breaker goes to the team’s fifth player on that day, as Middlebury’s Ben Kunofsky shot an 80 to edge an 82 shot by Josh Grossman of Trinity. Hamilton finished three strokes back with a 616, while Williams struggled on day two with a 325, finishing in fourth place with a 631.

Leading the Panthers on day two was Brian Cady, who pared the course with a 71 to lead all players on day two (149 overall). Jimmy Levins came in with a 73 for a two-day total of 150, followed by Kyle Perez and Michael McCormick, who each shot 78’s on the second day of competition. Perez ended the tournament with a 160, while McCormick shot a 162. Kunofsky, who led the team with a 76 on day one, shot an 80 on the second day for an overall score of 156.

Reid Longley of Trinity captured medalist honors, with a 73 and 74 for a two-day total of 147. Cady finished second overall (149), followed by Levins (150), Alec MacColl of Trinity (152) and L.J. Scurfield (Hamilton (152).
