Men's Hockey Wins Seventh NCAA Title

3/19/05 - Middlebury won its seventh NCAA Championship as they defeated St. Thomas, 5-0. The shutout is the fourth for the Panthers in the NCAA Championship games, and improves them to 7-0 in title games. Middlebury is now 28-5-2 in NCAA Tournament play, boasting more wins than any other team in NCAA history. The NCAA title is the 24th (women’s hockey won 23rd earlier in the night) for Middlebury College over the past 10 years. The Panthers end the season at 23-4-3, while the Tommies finish at 20-6-5.

Phinney Earns All-American Status

3/18/05 - Middlebury College men’s hockey player Brian Phinney (Ripton, Vt.) has been named a first-team All-American by the AHCA (American Hockey Coaches Association). The Vermont native is currently preparing for this weekend’s NCAA Hockey Championships hosted by Middlebury College.

Men's Hockey To Play For NCAA Title

3/18/05 - Middlebury scored four third period goals on its way to a 5-2 win over New England College in the NCAA semifinals in Kenyon Arena. The Panthers will take on St. Thomas, a 4-1 winner over Trinity, in the NCAA Championship on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

Men's Hockey Set To Host Final Four

3/15/05 - For the fourth time in school history, Middlebury College will be the host site for the NCAA Division III Men’s Hockey Championship. The games will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 18-19 at the Kenyon Arena. Middlebury will meet New England College (4-2 winner over Manhattanville) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, while Trinity (4-0 winner over Geneseo) takes on St. Thomas (a 3-2 winner over St. Norbert) in the first game at 3:30 p.m. The winners meet for the NCAA title on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

3/13/05 - Middlebury College will be the host site for the 2005 NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championship. The semifinals will take place on Friday, March 18th at 3:30 and 7:00, while the championship game is slated for Saturday, March 19th at 7:00. Men's Hockey Thumps Curry, Will Host Final Four

3/12/05 - Middlebury exploded for three goals in a 1:53 span in the second period to lift the Panthers to a 6-0 win over Curry in the NCAA Quarterfinals. With the win, Middlebury will host the NCAA Semifinals and Championship next Friday and Saturday, March 18-19 at the Kenyon Arena. Men's Hockey Captures NESCAC Crown

3/6/05 - Senior captain Brian Phinney scored two goals and assisted on the game-winner and freshman Ross Cherry made 46 saves in goal to lead Middlebury to a 3-2 win over Bowdoin in the finals of the NESCAC Men's Hockey Championship Tournament at Kingswood-Oxford Rink. The Panthers earn an automatic bid the NCAA Tournament and will host Curry on Saturday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Men's Hockey Tops Colby, Will Play For NESCAC Title

3/5/05 - Patrick Nugent had a goal and an assist and first-year goaltender Ross Cherry saved 29 out of 30 shots to lead Middlebury to a 4-1 win over Colby in a game hosted by Trinity, played at the Kingswood-Oxford Rink. The Panthers advanced to the NESCAC Championship game to face Bowdoin.

3/1/05 - The Middlebury College men’s hockey team will make its sixth consecutive appearance in the NESCAC Tournament this weekend in Hartford, Connecticut. For the first time in the history of the tournament, the semifinals and finals will not be held at the Kenyon Arena on the campus of Middlebury College. The games will be hosted by Trinity College and played at the Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Men's Hockey Tops Hamilton, Headed To NESCAC Semi's

2/26/05 - Middlebury’s rookie netminder Ross Cherry made 21 saves to earn his first career shutout as the Panthers topped Hamilton 3-0 in a NESCAC quarterfinal contest. The win avenges a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Continentals earlier in the season. Middlebury advances to take on Colby next Saturday at Trinity, while the host school will meet Bowdoin in the other semifinal match-up. Hamilton ends its season at 9-12-4. Phinney Is Finalist For Concannon Award

2/24/05 - Gridiron Club of Greater Boston president Ken Eldridge today announced the thirteen semifinalists for the fifth Joe Concannon Award, given annually to New England’s best American-born Division II/III college hockey player. Middlebury’s Brian Phinney (Ripton, Vt.) has been selected as one of the 13 semifinalists.

Beaney Named Sports Ethics Fellow

2/24/05 - The Institute for International Sport proudly announces that Bill Beaney, Head Men’s Hockey and Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach at Middlebury College, has been named a 2005 Sports Ethics Fellow. This year’s list of Sports Ethics fellows, called “A Celebration of Division III,” recognizes the great strides and ethical initiatives being undertaken at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III level. The 12 honorees have consistently demonstrated an interest in promoting the ideals of ethics and fair play in sport and society.

Midd. Thumps Norwich, To Host Hamilton

2/19/05 - The Panther men's hockey team ended its regular season on the right foot, as they thumped in-state rival Norwich, 7-3. Middlebury clinches the second seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and will host #7 Hamilton next Saturday, February 26th in a NESCAC Quarterfinal match-up.

2/18/05 - Senior Brian Phinney's goal with 12:35 left in regulation helped lift seventh-ranked Middlebury past Saint Michael's College, 4-1, in ECAC East/NESCAC men's ice hockey contest.

Gilchrist Earns Player Of The Week Honors

2/14/05 - Middlebury College men’s hockey player Mickey Gilchrist (Ottawa, Ont.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week. Gilchrist scored five goals and dished out an assist in a 1-0-1 week for Middlebury. The rookie scored a pair and added an assist in a 6-0 win over Wesleyan, before scoring a hat-trick in the Panthers tie with Trinity. He currently leads Middlebury with 14 goals on the season.

Men's Hockey Ties Trinity

2/12/05 - Middlebury came back from a 3-0 deficit to earn a 4-4 tie with Trinity. The tie, along with a Bowdoin loss today, clinches the top spot in the NESCAC standings for the Bantams with one weekend to play.

Men's Hockey Thumps Wesleyan

2/11/05 - Middlebury scored three first period goals on its way to a 6-0 NESCAC win over Wesleyan. The Panthers are ranked seventh in the latest national poll and will host sixth-ranked Trinity on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Hamilton Downs Men's Hockey

2/5/05 - Middlebury was only able to muster up a weekend split of its two NESCAC road games as they suffered a 3-2 loss at Hamilton. The Panthers out shot the Continentals 34-19, but could not capitalize on their opportunities.

Men's Hockey Holds Off Amherst

2/4/05 - Middlebury remained unbeaten in its last six games as they picked up a 3-2 NESCAC win over Amherst. The Panthers scored three first period goals and then held on for the road win.

Men's Hockey Slips Past UMass.-Boston

1/29/05 - Middlebury put 42 shots on the board, but were only able to muster up a pair of goals in a 2-1 win over UMass.-Boston. The Panthers return to action next weekend at Amherst and Hamilton.

Babson Ties Men's Hockey

1/28/05 - Middlebury and Babson battled to a 1-1 tie at the Kenyon Arena, in an NESCAC/ECAC match-up. The Panthers out shot the Beavers 33-24 on the night, but could not muster up the game-winner.

Panthers Top Plattsburgh

1/25/05 - Middlebury's Evgeny Saidachev scored with just 1:23 remaining to lift the Panthers to at 4-3 non-league win at Plattsburgh. Middlebury out shot Plattsburgh 34-25 on the night as the Panthers move to 12-3-1.

Fuld's Late Goal Lifts Middlebury Over N.E.C.

1/22/05 - Middlebury’s Richie Fuld scored with 1:53 left in the game to give Middlebury a 4-3 win over New England College. The goal came when Fuld hit an open net from the far side after a save on a wrap-around shot by Jed McDonald. The tally was the first of the season for the sophomore, playing in his fifth game.

Men's Hockey Gets Back On Track

1/21/05 - Middlebury broke its first three-game losing streak in four years as they defeated St. Anselm 3-1 at the Kenyon Arena. First-year netminder Ross Cherry was impressive in his collegiate debut, as he made 26 saves in goal to earn the win.

Men's Hockey Falls To Williams

1/18/05 - Despite out shooting Williams 40-20, Middlebury came up on the short end of a 6-3 game at the Kenyon Arena. The three consecutive losses are the first for Middlebury, since dropping games to Plattsburgh, Wisconsin-Stevens Point and St. Norbert in ’99-’00. The loss also snaps an 18-game unbeaten streak at Kenyon Arena, dating back to a 1/17/04 loss to Colby.

Men's Hockey Drops Second Straight

1/15/05 - The Middlebury men’s hockey team lost its second straight game as they fell at Colby, 2-0. The consecutive losses are the first for the Panthers since a pair of PrimeLink losses to Norwich in Plattsburgh in ’02.

Men's Hockey Falls At Bowdoin

1/14/05 - Middlebury saw its 18-game unbeaten streak come to an end as Bowdoin's Adam Dann scored the game-winner with 1:22 left in the third period to give 13th-ranked Bowdoin an eventual 4-2 victory over top-ranked Middlebury. The Polar Bears defeat the Panthers for the first time since the 1993-94 season, snapping a 10-game winless streak in the series. The defending national champion Panthers lose their first game of the season.

Men's Hockey Blanks Tufts

1/8/05 - Middlebury exploded for three third period goals on its way to a 7-0 win over Tufts. The Panthers out shot the Jumbos 50-7 on the night to improve to 9-0-1 on the season. Middlebury is ranked first in the latest Division III national poll.

Men's Hockey Tops Conn. College

1/7/05 - Despite out shooting Connecticut College 42-13, Middlebury was only able to muster up a pair of goals in a 2-1 win over the Camels in the Kenyon Arena. The Panthers are the top-ranked team in the latest Division III national poll.

Men's Hockey Ties Team U.S.A.

1/2/05 - Middlebury and the USA Hockey Under 18 National Team battled to a 2-2 tie at the Middlebury College Holiday Classic. The game is consider an exhibition with the Panthers returning to NESCAC action next Friday and Saturday in the Kenyon Arena.

Men's Hockey Tops Skidmore

1/1/05 - Middlebury opened 2005 with a 3-1 win over Skidmore in the Middlebury College Holiday Classic. The Panthers return to action on Sunday when the host the U.S.A. Under-18 Team at 4:00 p.m.

Men's Hockey Blanks Amherst

12/11/04 - Middlebury ended its first semester unbeaten as they defeated Amherst, 5-0. The Panthers return to action when they host the Holiday Classic on January 1st and 2nd in the Kenyon Arena.

Men's Hockey Earns 5-2 Win Over S. Maine

12/4/04 - Five different players scored as Middlebury defeated Southern Maine, 5-2. John Sales and Justin Gaines gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead before Tom Maldonado made it a 3-0 game with one minute left in the second period. Patrick Nugent and James Guay scored between a pair of Southern Maine third period goals to make it a 5-2 final. The Panthers out shot the Huskies 38-15 as Yen-I Chen made 13 saves in goal for the win.

Men's Hockey Thumps Salem

12/3/04 - Sixteen different players registered at least one point as Middlebury thumped Salem State, 9-3. The Panthers went 4/5 on the power play and outshot the Vikings 50-23 on the night. Mickey Gilchrist and Darwin Hunt each had two goals and one assist in the win, while Eric LaFreniere added a goal and an assist. Yen-I Chen made 20 saves in goal for the win. 

Men's Hockey Earns Tie With Norwich

11/27/04 - It took a shootout to decide the winner of the 2004 PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout hosted by Middlebury College. After a 1-1 tie, Norwich earned a 2-1 win in the shootout, to capture its fourth shootout title. The game goes down as a tie with both teams moving to 3-0-1.

Men's Hockey Tops Plattsburgh, 5-1

11/26/04 - Middlebury scored three second period goals on its way to a 5-1 win over Plattsburgh in the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout. The Panthers will take on Norwich, a 4-3 overtime winner over Potsdam, in the title game tomorrow night at 7:00. Plattsburgh and Potsdam will collide in the consolation game at 4:00.

Men's Hockey Moves To 2-0

11/20/04 - John Sales scored two goals to lift Middlebury to a 7-1 win over Skidmore at the Kenyon Arena. The Panthers improve to 2-0 on the season and will host the PrimeLink Tournament this Friday and Saturday.

Men's Hockey Opens Season With Thumping Of Castleton

11/19/04 - Middlebury opened defense of its NCAA title with a 9-1 thumping of Castleton State at the Kenyon Arena. The Panthers out shot Castleton 61-11, using seven different goal scorers en route to the win. Rookies James Guay and Scott Bartlett each scored a pair of goals in the win to lead the Middlebury offense. Fellow rookie Tom Maldonado dished out three assists in the game, while classmate Justin Gaines had a pair. John Sales scored a goal and handed out two assists in the win, while Yen-I Chen made 10 stops in goal.
