1/1/05 - Middlebury opened 2005 with a 3-1 win over Skidmore in the Middlebury College Holiday Classic. The Panthers return to action on Sunday when the host the U.S.A. Under-18 Team at 4:00 p.m.
Middlebury opened the scoring at 8:27 as Brian Phinney shot the puck down the ice for a Middlebury change. The puck caught Skidmore goaltender Mike Mansfield off-guard, as it went into the net off his pads from the opposite face-off circle 150 feet away. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead at 8:11 of the second period with a power play goal. Patrick Nugent earned the goal as he put in a rebound after a shot from just inside the zone from Jeff Smith. Phinney netted his second of the game at 12:04 as his power play goal found the five-hole of Mansfield. Skidmore got on the board at 13:36 of the third period as Morgan Nelson scored on a rebound after a save from the outside on Nate Smith.
Middlebury junior Mark Spadaccini made 15 saves in his collegiate debut, while Mike Mansfield made 28 stops for Skidmore.
