Smith and Gilchrist Named All-NESCAC
March 02, 2006
Senior captain Jeff Smith earned First-team All-NESCAC honors.
Senior Jeff Smith (Nepean, Ont.) and sophomore Mickey Gilchrist (Ottawa, Ont.) have both been named to the NESCAC men’s hockey first-team. The duo are preparing to host the NESCAC semifinals and championship this weekend at Kenyon Arena.
Smith earns the first-team honors as the Panther’s top defender and team captain. One of just two seniors on the team, Smith ended the regular season on a good note, by scoring the game-winner vs. Amherst on senior day. The goal was one of five for Smith this season, to go along with eight assists for 13 points. He has been the leader of a defense that paces the nation with a mere 1.56 goals/game scoring defense and a NESCAC-best .857 penalty kill percentage. He has played in 111 career games as a Panther.
After three goals in his first 11 games, Gilchrist has scored 17 in his last 14 to lead the team and the NESCAC in goals/game this season. The sophomore earned an assistant captain letter midway through the season and now has 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points to go along with his team-leading eight power play and four game-wining goals. He now has 41 goals in 53 games played at Middlebury.
