Wood Earns NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship

The NCAA has awarded 58 postgraduate scholarships of $7,500 each to 29 men and 29 women who participated in spring sports. Middlebury men’s lacrosse player Gabe Wood (Tacoma, Wash.) was a recipient of one of these prestigious scholarships. To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated.

Campbell Named Men's Lacrosse Coach

Former Middlebury College goalkeeper Dave Campbell has been named the new head coach of the men’s lacrosse program at his alma mater. He takes over the reigns from 15-year head coach Erin Quinn, who resigned the post this spring after being named the college’s new director of athletics, effective July 1.

“Dave is one of the outstanding coaches in the game of lacrosse,” said soon-to-be Director of Athletics Erin Quinn. “He has the balance of technical and tactical expertise, the understanding of the proper balance of athletics in a liberal arts education, and the benefit of great coaching experiences at Notre Dame and Connecticut College. The national search resulted in some impressive candidates, but he proved to be the perfect fit for Middlebury College.”

Men's Lax Players Earn All-American Honors

Senior Gabe Wood (Tacoma, Wash.) and sophomore Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, Conn.) both earned All-American honor today from the USILA (United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association). Seniors Aaron Herter (Carlisle, Mass.) and Henry Sheehan (Newport, R.I.) along with junior Peter Mellen (Cherry Hill, N.J.) earned honorable mention honors. The five players helped lead Middlebury to a 13-4 record, including its sixth consecutive NESCAC Championship and its ninth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

All-New England Honors Announced

Four members of the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team were honored today when the NEILA (New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) announced its post-season teams. Seniors Gabe Wood (Tacoma, Wash.) and Aaron Herter (Carlisle, Mass.) along with junior Peter Mellen (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and sophomore Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, Conn.) were all first-team selections. Head coach Erin Quinn was deemed the organization’s coach of the year.

Men's Lacrosse Ends Season In Quarters

A furious fourth quarter, six-goal rally by Middlebury wasn’t enough to overcome Cortland State in an NCAA Quarterfinal contest, as the visiting Panthers fell 12-8. With the win, the Red Dragons, 16-3, advance to the NCAA semifinals. The Panthers end their season with a 13-4 mark, while head coach Erin Quinn, career record at Middlebury 202-38 (.842 winning percentage), steps away from his lacrosse coaching duties to assume his new role as director of athletics in July.

Men's Lacrosse Headed To Cortland For NCAA Quarters

The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team will head to New York for an NCAA Quarterfinal game at Cortland on Wednesday, May 17th at 2:00 p.m. The winner of the game will take on the winner of the Geneseo/Wesleyan game in the semifinals on Sunday, May 21st. If victorious, the Panthers would host Wesleyan or travel to Geneseo for the semifinal contest.

Men's Lacrosse Thumps Springfield

Middlebury jumped out with a 5-0 first quarter run and cruised to a 17-4 win over Springfield in an NCAA second round game. The Panthers advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals at Cortland on Wednesday, May 17th at a time to be determined. Springfield, the Pilgrim League champions, ends its season with a 13-5 record.

Men's Lacrosse To Host Springfield In NCAA Tournament Game

Middlebury will make its ninth consecutive and 10th overall appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament this weekend. The Panthers will host Springfield on Saturday, May 13th at 1:00 p.m. on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. The winner of the game will advance to an NCAA quarterfinal match-up on Wednesday, May 17th with the site and opponent to be determined.

Men's Lax With Six On All-NESCAC Squad

Six members of the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team were honored today when the All-NESCAC teams were announced. Seniors Gabe Wood (Tacoma, Wash.) and Aaron Herter (Carlisle, Mass.) along with junior Peter Mellen (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and sophomore Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, Conn.) were all first-team selections. Seniors Henry Sheehan (Newport, R.I.) and Travis Meyer (Potomac, Md.) were both named to the second-team.

Wood Is NESCAC Player of the Week

Middlebury College men’s lacrosse player Gabe Wood (Tacoma, Wash.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week. Wood had another stellar week on defense for Middlebury, leading the Panthers to their sixth straight NESCAC Championship. The senior had a dozen ground balls in two games, while successfully clearing the ball on several occasions for Middlebury. No clear was bigger than the final one on Sunday, as he went coast-to-coast, scoring the man-down game-winning goal as time expired to lift the Panthers to a 10-9 win over Wesleyan in the title game.

Men's Lax Captures Sixth NESCAC Title

Defenseman Gabe Wood drove the length of the field and scored a man-down goal as time expired to break a 9-9 tie and lift Middlebury to a 10-9 victory over Wesleyan in the NESCAC title game. The long-stick defender dodged several opponents on his way down the field, switching to a left-handed shot just outside the crease for the tally. Middlebury receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while Wesleyan will hope for an at-large bid. The selections will be announced Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. on CSTV. The win was the third consecutive for the Panthers over the Cardinals in the title game, avenging an earlier season loss.

Men's Lax Wins OT Thriller, Headed To NESCAC Final

Middlebury’s Travis Meyer scored driving to the goal from the right side with 58 seconds left in triple overtime to lift the Panthers to an 12-11 win over Tufts in a NESCAC semifinal contest. The win was the 200th of his career (37 losses) for Middlebury head coach Erin Quinn, who was two days ago named the school’s new Director of Athletics as of July 1. Middlebury advances to take on Wesleyan in the NESCAC Championship at noon on Sunday. Today’s game was the longest in NESCAC Tournament history.

Sheehan Earns Player of the Week Honors

Middlebury College men’s lacrosse player Henry Sheehan (Newport, R.I.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week. The senior scored three goals and assisted on five others as Middlebury picked up a pair of NESCAC wins. He began with week with a goal and five assists as Middlebury earned an 11-7 win over Williams. Sheehan then scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 1:11 remaining as the Panthers picked up a 9-8 come-from-behind win at Bates.

Late Comeback Lifts Men's Lacrosse Over Bates

The Middlebury men's lacrosse team clinched its sixth straight NESCAC regular season title as they won a 9-8 road game at Bates. The Panthers draw a first-round bye and will host the NESCAC semifinals and finals May 6th and 7th on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium.

Men's Lacrosse Handles Williams

Middlebury scored four goals in the first 4:27 of the fourth quarter to break open a 6-6 game to beat Williams 11-7 at Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium in a mid-week game. The Panthers improve to 9-3 and 7-1 in NESCAC play will finish the regular season with a trip to Bates this Saturday.

Men's Lacrosse Dominates Trinity

Middlebury scored the first 10 goals of the game en route to a 14-3 victory over Trinity at Alumni Stadium. The Panthers who improve to 8-3 and 6-1 in NESCAC play will host Williams in their final regular season home game next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Trinity falls to 5-6 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Men's Lax Wins At RPI

Jim Cabrera tallied five goals, including two in the first half to lead Middlebury past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in non-conference men’s lacrosse action. With the victory, the Panthers improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Red Hawks fall to 5-7 overall.

Men's Lacrosse Hangs On To Defeat Bowdoin

Middlebury's leading scorer Jim Cabrera scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Panthers' men's lacrosse team to a dramatic 12-11 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon. Middlebury (6-3, 5-1 NESCAC) squandered an eight-goal halftime lead to the Polar Bears (6-4, 3-2) and went 30:45 without scoring before Cabrera's tally.

Men's Lacrosse Cruises Past Tufts

Middlebury scored seven straight goals in the first half to build a seven goal advantage and cruised past visiting Tufts 12-4 at Alumni Stadium today in a mid-week match-up of NESCAC foes. Middlebury’s next game is at Bowdoin this Saturday while Tufts also heads to Maine on Saturday to play Colby.

Men's Lacrosse Falls To Wesleyan

Wesleyan handed Middlebury its first home NESCAC loss in 11 years as the Cardinals pulled out a 10-7 victory on Kohn Field. The streak ran 49 games and dated back to a 9-8 triple overtime loss to Connecticut College in April of '95. The loss also snapped a 14-game NESCAC winning streak for the Panthers. Middlebury had defeated Wesleyan in each of the last two NESCAC Championship games, as well as the NCAA Quarterfinals a year ago. The three losses in a season for the Panthers are the most since the ’97 team finished at 11-3.

Men's Lax Knocked Off By Springfield

Fourth-ranked Middlebury fell to 3-2 on the season as they fell 11-10 on the road at Springfield. Taylor Brown netted a shot off a feed from Brandon Asplundh with a mere five seconds left in regulation as the Pride upset Middlebury 11-10 at Benedum Field.

Men's Lax Slips By Conn.

Middlebury returned to NESCAC action with an 8-6 road victory over Connecticut College as four different players shared the scoring load with two goals each for the Panthers. Middlebury will go back on the road to face Springfield College in a midweek contest this Wednesday.

Middlebury Falls At Gettysburg

Middlebury suffered its first loss of the season as the #2 Panthers fell 7-4 at third-ranked Gettysburg. Chase Stewart netted his second hat trick of the season for the Bullets, including the game-winner early in the third quarter to lift Gettysburg to the win.

Men's Lacrosse Edges Stevens Institute

Middlebury outlasted a tough Stevens Institute 13-12 today at Kohn Field as a game-tying shot by the Ducks was waived off for crossing the goal just moments after the game ended. The Panthers, who improve to 2-0 on the year, return to action next Wednesday as they make their annual trip to Pennsylvania to play Gettysburg in a non-league game. Stevens Institute falls to 3-2 on the season.

Cabrera Earns Player of the Week Honors

Middlebury College men’s lacrosse player Jim Cabrera (Greenwich, Conn.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week. The 2005 NESCAC Rookie of the Year started the 2006 campaign with five goals on 10 shots during the Panthers’ 14-4 win over Colby. Cabrera netted a pair of key goals at the end of the third quarter to give Middlebury a 13-3 lead.

Cabrera and the Panthers will host Stevens Institute this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on Kohn Field.

Men's Lacrosse Wins Home-Opener

Middlebury built an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised past visiting Colby this afternoon at Kohn Field 14-4 in the season-opener for both schools. The Panthers return to action next Saturday to face Stevens Institute in a non-league game at Kohn Field.

Ritter Earns Award

Men's lacrosse assistant coach Bob Ritter has been named the inaugural IMLCA (Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Associate) National Assistant Coach of the Year.
