Now in its 53rd season as a varsity sport, soccer has developed a long, proud tradition at Middlebury. The program has consistently been one of the most powerful and respected in New England. The College has produced 30 All-Americans, 95 All-New England players, and others who have gone on to play soccer in both the old NASL and in the MISL. Middlebury has consistently been one of the top teams in the NESCAC, a conference that ranks among the nation's best. The Panthers have 10 or more wins in 11 of the last 13 seasons and have advanced to the post-season in 19 of the 22 years David Saward has been at the helm. Middlebury has sported an impressive 148-44-18 record over the past 13 seasons and have appeared in the NCAA Tournament seven of the last 13 years. The team has appeared in four NESCAC title games, winning the title in '00. The Panthers have twice received the New England Division III Fair Play and Sportsmanship Award.
The Panther soccer program has two units, the varsity and the B team. Middlebury's varsity squad carries between 18 and 20 players. Practice is held daily except Sunday, and a varsity player is expected to attend practice unless he has an academic conflict. Combining two-hour practice sessions with preparation and post-activity time, each student is likely to be committed to a total of about three hours a day.
The B team is open only to first-year students and sophomores, while the varsity team is open to all athletes who can qualify. The B team has become a vital developmental tool in the success of the program. The team also plays a seven-match schedule against such teams as the University of Vermont, St. Michael's, Williams, and Dartmouth. On the average, the B team annually supplies about four players to the varsity squad. It provides good players an opportunity to play and develop with accomplished players.
