Men's Tennis To Appear On CBS Sports

6/29/04 - Several NCAA championships will be featured Saturday on the national Emmy nominated CBS Sports NCAA seasonal show. The 60-minute show will be hosted by veteran CBS announcer Bonnie Bernstein and will air Saturday, July 3 at 4 p.m. The Middlebury College men's tennis will be part of the show, while the women's lacrosse will not, since their championship was televised on CSTV.

Schwarz Named ITA National Coach Of The Year

5/17/04 - After winning Regional and NESCAC honors, Middlebury College men's tennis coach Dave Schwarz has been named the ITA National Coach of the Year. The four-year head coach led the Panthers to their first NCAA Championship last week with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Williams. Earlier in the spring, he led the team to its first NESCAC Championship.

Men's Tennis Wins First NCAA Title

5/14/04 - First-year player Alex Scott held serve with an overhead slam to give Middlebury its first NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship title with a 4-3 win over Williams on Friday afternoon at Bates College’s Wallach Tennis Center. The national championship is the 21st for the College since ’95 and the fourth in the 2003-04 year. The Panthers end the season with a school-record 18 wins against just three losses. Earlier in the day, head coach David Schwarz was named the ITA National Coach of the Year.

Individuals Compete At NCAA's

5/16/04 - Four men's tennis players competed in the individual championships after the Panthers had won the national title. In singles action, Brian Waldron won his first-round match-up 6-4, 6-2, before falling in the second round 6-1, 7-5. Nathan Edmunds fell in the first round, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles action, Justin Ingoglia and George Mayer were eliminated 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of compeition.

Men's Tennis To Play For NCAA Championship

5/13/04 - Middlebury will play in the NCAA Championship of Division III Men’s Tennis after a 4-1 win over defending NCAA Champion Emory. The Panthers will take on NESCAC rival Williams in the championship match at 1:00 p.m. Friday on the campus of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. The win avenges a loss to Emory in last year’s NCAA semifinals. (photo gallery)

Men's Tennis Advances To NCAA Semi's

5/12/04 - Middlebury advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the second consecutive year, with a 4-0 win over Trinity of Texas. The Panthers will take on defending national champion Emory on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the NCAA semifinals. The matches are taking place at Bates College in Maine.

Schwarz Named Coach Of The Year

5/5/04 - Men's Tennis head coach Dave Schwarz has been named the ITA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year. The four-year head coach has the Panthers in the NCAA quarterfinals for the second consecutive year after leading the team to its first NESCAC Championship in school history. Middlebury is making its third NCAA Tournament appearance overall behind the two-time NESCAC Coach of the Year. He has earned an overall match record of 48-16 in his four season at the helm of the men's tennis program.

Four Individuals Qualify For NCAA's

5/5/04 - Four members of the Middlebury College men's tennis team have qualified for the NCAA individual championships. All four players will also be taking part in the team championship on May 12-14 at Bates College. The Panthers will take on Trinity of Texas in the quarterfinals at noon on Wednesday. If victorious, they would play in the semifinals on Thursday and the Championship on Friday.

Men's Tennis Wins NCAA Regional

5/2/04 - The Middlebury College men’s tennis team won its second straight NCAA Regional as they defeated NESCAC foe Trinity, 5-1. The Panthers advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals on May 12-14th at Bates College. Middlebury also improves on its school record of 15 wins this season, against only three losses. Sophomore Brian Waldron’s (Rye, N.Y.) 6-4, 6-4 win at #2 singles wrapped up the match, but other sets were played out due to a coach’s agreement before the match.

Men's Tennis Earns Awards

4/29/04 - Middlebury College men's tennis player Nathan Edmunds has been named the NESCAC Player of the Year. The sophomore has enjoyed a tremendous season, playing in the #1 singles slot. He was also a first-team All-NESCAC selection, along with sophomore teammate Brian Waldron.

Earning NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors was Middlebury's first-year player George Mayer. Head Coach Dave Schwarz was also honored, by earning NESCAC Co-Coach of the Year honors.

Men's Tennis To Host NCAA Regional

4/27/04 - The Middlebury College men's tennis team has received a bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament. For the third straight season, the Panthers will host a NCAA regional this weekend on its home courts.

Men's Tennis Captures NESCAC Championship

4/25/04 - Middlebury won its first NESCAC Men’s Tennis Championship trophy at Williams, owners of the title for the last 11 years. Brian Waldron (No. 2 singles), George Mayer (No. 4 singles), and the doubles pair of Nathan Edmunds and Waldron (No. 3 doubles) all captured their respective titles for the Panthers.

 

Middlebury made its four-point lead going into the championship day hold up, beating runner-up Williams by three points, 29-26. Tufts edged out Bowdoin by a half of a point for third place. Williams boasts NESCAC champions at No. 3 singles (Jeff Kivitz), No. 5 singles (Scott Mackenzie), No. 6 singles (Lex Urban), and No. 2 doubles (John Haywood and Urban).

Men's Tennis Wins Three More

4/17/04 - The Middlebury men's tennis team improved to 14-3 on the year with three more wins convincing wins last week. The Panthers defeated Skidmore, Amherst and Union, all by scores of 7-0. The post-season begins this weekend as they will take part in the NESCAC Championships at Williams.

4/10/04 - The Middlebury College men's tennis team improved to 11-3 on the season with a 5-2 win over Bowdoin in a home match on Saturday. The Panthers return to action on Thursday at Skidmore.

4/7/04 - The Middlebury men's tennis team defeated Williams 6-1 for the second straight year. The Panthers won the doubles point before winning five of six singles matches for the convincing win.

4/2/04 - The Panther men's tennis team improved to 9-3 on the spring with a convincing 7-0 win over Tufts in the Nelson Recreational Center. The Panthers won all but one singles match in straight sets, while holding their opponents to under four games in doubles action.

3/31/04 - Middlebury fell 6-1 at Division I Dartmouth College. The lone singles winner was Nathan Edmunds, who won 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at #2 singles.

Men's Tennis Enjoys Success In California

3/27/04 - The Middlebury College men’s tennis team played five matches in California over the break. The Panthers defeated Pomona Pitzer 6-1, lost to Vanguard 7-0, topped the University of the South and Occidental 7-0, before falling to Cal.-Santa Cruz 5-2 and topping Cal.-Lutheran 7-0.
