5/2/04 - The Middlebury College men’s tennis team won its second straight NCAA Regional as they defeated NESCAC foe Trinity, 5-1. The Panthers advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals on May 12-14th at Bates College. Middlebury also improves on its school record of 15 wins this season, against only three losses. Sophomore Brian Waldron’s (Rye, N.Y.) 6-4, 6-4 win at #2 singles wrapped up the match, but other sets were played out due to a coach’s agreement before the match.

The day began well as Middlebury won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Justin Ingoglia (N. Caldwell, N.J.) and rookie George Mayer (Merion, Pa.) won the tie-breaker at #1, 9-8 (11-9). Sophomore Ari Beilin (S. Hamilton, Mass.) and first-year player Alex Scott (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) were 8-6 winners at #2, while sophomores Nathan Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.) and Waldron were 8-4 winners.

In singles action, Edmunds match at #1 singles was a DNF. Waldron won at #2, while Beilin was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at #3. Mayer fell 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at #4, Ingoglia was 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in the #5 slot, while Scott was a 6-1, 6-4 winner in the sixth match.
