Men's Hoops Wins Home-Opener

11/27/05 - Middlebury's Mike Walsh scored in the paint with 35 seconds remaining, giving Middlebury a 68-66 lead over St. Lawrence which they would not relinquish. The Panthers move to 2-0 on the season, while the Saints fall to 1-3.

St. Lawrence held a 33-27 lead at the half, behind 48 percent shooting from the floor. The Saints led by as many as 10 in the second half, before the Panthers began to chip away. Ben Rudin sparked a 12-2 run at the 8:22 mark of the second half, scoring six points to tie the game at 61 apiece. The lead grew to 66-61 on a three from Sam Daly and a lay up from Evan Thompson with 2:52 remaining.

Middlebury had several chances to seal the game down the stretch, but missed six free throws in the game's final 2:23. Following Walsh's hoop with 35 seconds left, Tyler Shaver had a chance to win it for St. Lawrence, but his three fell short as time expired.

 Walsh led the Panthers with 14 points on 7 of 8 shooting, while Thompson scored 14 of his own. Daly added 13 points in the win, while Rudin scored 11 and dished out seven assists. Shaver paced St. Lawrence with a game-high 17, while Tom Wopperer added a dozen.
