Men's Basketball Drops Tight One At Norwich

Norwich's Jerrold Williams hit four straight free throws and Middlebury went scoreless over the final three minutes as the Cadets came from four-points down to defeat the Panthers, 61-57 at Andrews Hall.

Middlebury (12-7) took a 52-48 lead on a Mike Walsh layup with five minutes remaining before Norwich (9-8) tied the game twice over the final four minutes of the contest. The score was knotted at 57 all with 39 seconds remaining when Williams put the Cadets ahead for good. Middlebury's Chris Dowd missed a three-point shot with six seconds to play, which would have tied the game. NU's Scott DuPont added an insurance free throw with three seconds to cap the scoring.

In the first half, Middlebury built an early five-point lead at 6-1, to which Norwich responded with a 15-4 run for a 16-10 lead with just under nine minutes to play. The score remained close for the remainder of the half as Norwich took a 33-31 halftime lead.

The second half was close as well as neither team led by more than four points. In all, there were nine lead changes and nine ties. Norwich won the rebounding battle, 51-44. The Cadets shot 38 percent from the floor and held the Panthers to 28 percent field goal shooting. Middlebury forced 19 Norwich turnovers, which led to 14 points.

Three Norwich players scored in double figures led by Williams' 17. Jamel Bedford and Rene Cheatham each added 11 points.
Andrew Harris led Middlebury with 12 points, Tim Edwards added 10 with nine rebounds, while Evan Thompson scored 10.
