Men's Hoops Wins Opener

The Middlebury men’s basketball team opened up its season with a 76-70 win over Gwynedd Mercy at the Ramapo Tournament in New Jersey. The Panthers shot .520 from the floor and held a 36-28 advantage on the boards.

Trailing 4-2, Middlebury went on an 11-2 run behind threes from Jake Wolfin and Nolan Thompson to take a 13-4 lead with 14:25 left in the first half. The Panthers led by as many as 17 on a three from Joey Kizel, making it a 37-20 game at the 2:28 mark, taking a 40-27 lead into the intermission.

Gwynedd Mercy chipped away in the second half, cutting the lead to 51-44 at the 9:04 mark. Middlebury regained control, extending the lead to 18 with a 71-53 lead with 2:02 remaining on a hoop from Peter Lynch.

The Griffins went on a late run to cut the lead to four with 28 seconds left, but the Panthers held on for the 76-70 victory.

Lynch had a huge game with 19 points on 9 of 10 shooting to lead all scorers. Kizel added 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Wolfin scored 14 with seven points and seven boards. 

Gwynedd Mercy had four players in double figures, led by Brandon Wyms and Dan DelConte with 13 points apiece.
