Sharry Honored By VSSA

January 24, 2012

Middlebury College men’s basketball player Ryan Sharry was one of three athletes honored by the Vermont Sportswriters and  Sportscasters Association for their efforts in the month of December. The VSSA also recognized Mount Anthony Union High School senior Abby Iannotti and Missisquoi Union junior Matthieu St. Amour. The three  athletes were chosen in a statewide vote of the VSSA membership after being nominated by a VSSA member.

Sharry, a preseason NCAA Division III All-American pick, was chosen as the VSSA Open Division Athlete of the Month. In December the senior forward helped lead undefeated Middlebury to a 4-0 month and the program’s first-ever No. 1 ranking, and reached the 1,000-point scoring plateau.

In those four games, including a 17-minute stint in his first game back from a preseason injury, Sharry averaged 17.75 points, 8.75 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks while shooting 57.4 percent from the floor. Sharry reached the 1,000-point mark in a Dec. 29 win over Curry.

Sharry became the third local athlete to win a monthly honor for 2011: Middlebury Union High School senior football player Marshall Hastings and Middlebury College junior field hockey player Lauren Greer also were recognized in the fall.
