Men's Basketball Wins Home-Opener

Middlebury had little trouble with Green Mountain, as the 18th-ranked Panthers picked up a 94-53 win over the Eagles (0-1) in the team’s home-opener in Pepin Gym. The Panthers shot 55.1% from the floor with 14 different players entering the scoring column. Middlebury returns to action on Friday night at Stevenson.
Middlebury jumped out to a 15-5 lead behind 7-9 shooting and a balanced attack. Leading 19-11, the Panthers went on a 9-0 run, holding a 28-11 advantage with 12:06 remaining in the first half. The lead extended to as many as 21 on two different occasions, as Middlebury went into the halftime break with a 47-28 lead.
The second half continue to go Middlebury’s way as the Panthers scored the first 11 points to hold a 58-28 advantage with 16:37 remaining. Back-to-back threes from Javier Lugris and Terry Jones brought Green Mountain within 22, but that’s as close as they’d come. The lead ballooned to a game-high 41 points twice, including on the final bucket of the game from Chris Churchill.
Matt Daley led the balanced attack with 14 points on 6-8 shooting, while Connor Huff netted 11. Jake Nidenberg scored 10 in the game, followed by nine from Matt St. Amour and eight apiece from Joey Kizel and Hunter Merryman. Kizel dished out a game-high seven assists, with four from Jake Brown. Six different Panthers had five or more rebounds in the game.
Jones paced the Eagles with 12, followed by Robert Holloway with nine and seven from Lugris.
