Popp is in his first year as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program at Middlebury College. He comes to Vermont by way of The Hoop Group based out of Neptune, New Jersey. Popp was the Director of Hoop Group Skills, the largest basketball camp in the country for youth and high school players. As a Hoop Group staffer, he oversaw all camp activities, from on court fundamental instruction to recruiting student-athletes for participation in camps, clinics and tournaments.
Prior to his summer with the Hoop Group, Popp has been heavily involved in basketball and coaching, while also furthering his education. He achieved his Master of Science in Sport Management from Springfield College from 2009-2011, and during this time he also served as the assistant coach on the Springfield College men’s basketball team. As a member of the Springfield College staff, Popp was the recruiting coordinator, academic liaison, lead scout, and head coach of the Junior varsity program.
From 2008-2009, Popp was an intern at the Northeast-10 Conference office located at Stonehill College. Parallel to his duties under the commissioner, Popp coached AAU for the nationally recognized program Expressions Elite, and ran clinics for the non-profit Boston based company Shooting Touch, Inc.
He is a Winchester, Massachusetts native who was highly touted out of high school and was recruited by the BIG 10, IVY and Patriot League Conferences. Popp played his prep school basketball at the Northfield Mount Hermon School where his team was nationally ranked. He went on to play at the University of Minnesota, taking part in the 2005 NCAA Division I Tournament. Popp then transferred to Assumption College where he finished his career, and was an integral part of the 2008 NCAA Division II sweet 16 team. He graduated from Assumption with a bachelor's degree in business in 2008.
