1/17/04 - Colby held off a late charge by Middlebury as they added an empty-netter for a 5-3 win. The win for the Mules was the first against the Panthers in the last 10 meetings.

Colby jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 6:31 as Patrick Walsh put home a shot after a scramble in front. Middlebury answered just 1:38 later as Adam Foote snapped in a shot from just outside the crease after a deflection. The Mules regained a one-goal lead at 10:23 when Patrick Rutherford scored after a rebound lay untouched in the low slot. Colby increased the lead to 3-1 at 4:17 of the second period with some nice passing leading to a power play goal by Brian Chisholm with a one-timer down low. The lead grew to 4-1 at 11:25 with a high off-speed shot from the point by Nate Stanglein. Brian Phinney brought the Panthers closer in the third period as he ripped a shot off the post from just inside the blue line. Middlebury continued to battle at 13:47 as John Sales ripped home a shot from the left point after Foote won the face-off back to him. The Panthers put up a flurry of shots in the final two minutes, but could not get the equalizer. Stanglein scored an empty-netter to wrap up the scoring with one second left to play.

Yen-I Chen and Marc Scheuer combined to make 14 saves for Middlebury, while Chris Reis made 27 stops for Colby. (box)
