Men's Hockey Falls At Bowdoin
January 14, 2005
1/14/05 - Middlebury saw its 18-game unbeaten streak come to an end as Bowdoin's Adam Dann scored the game-winner with 1:22 left in the third period to give 13th-ranked Bowdoin an eventual 4-2 victory over top-ranked Middlebury. The Polar Bears defeat the Panthers for the first time since the 1993-94 season, snapping a 10-game winless streak in the series. The defending national champion Panthers lose their first game of the season.
The first period featured back-and-forth play that saw the contest go nearly 15 minutes without a whistle to stop play. The Polar Bears took advantage of the first powerplay of the evening late in the opening frame when Nick Dunn pounced on a rebound to make it 1-0. Bowdoin doubled their lead just over three minutes into the second period when Adam Dann scored his first goal of the night from between the circles to make it 2-0 Polar Bears. The Panthers answered, however, as consecutive goals from Mickey Gilchrist and Darwin Hunt evened the score going into the third. On the powerplay mid-way through the period, Gilchrist took a backdoor feed from John Sales and found the back of the net. Later in the frame, Hunt capitalized on an odd-man rush for the Panthers to even the score at 14:32. The game remained deadlocked late into the final frame as both teams squandered powerplay chances. With just under two minutes left, Dann collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated in on Middlebury netminder Yen-I Chen. The junior forward went five-hole on the Panther netminder and the puck trickled over the goalline for the go-ahead tally. Bowdoin's Alden Cook added an empty-netter to make it a 4-2 final. George Papachristopoulos was outstanding in net for Bowdoin, making 32 saves between the pipes. Chen made 21 stops for the Panthers. (from Bowdoin SID)
