Middlebury Blanks Salem State

December 3, 2005

12/3/05 - Middlebury scored a pair of late goals to break up a 1-0 game and come away with a 3-0 win over Salem State. The top-ranked Panthers wrap up their semester next Friday night when they host <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Plattsburgh at 7:00 p.m.

Following a scoreless first period, Middlebury went on a five-on-three power play midway through the second period after a five-minute major. The Panthers took advantage as Eric LaFreniere sent a pass from the left wing to Kyle Koziara at the top of the right circle. Koziara ripped a one-timer in and out of the net off the top corner of the pipe for the 1-0 lead. The Salem State defense held tough, killing the remainder of the penalty as well as a second five-minute major later in the period.

Salem State had three power play opportunities in the third period, but could not score the equalizer. The Panthers gained some breathing room at 17:38 as Justin Gaines dropped a pass to Samuel Driver in transition. Driver gathered the puck and snapped a shot to the top left corner of the net for the 2-0 lead. Middlebury added another goal late, as Jamie McKenna scored with a nice feed from John Sales with 43 seconds left to play.

Ross Cherry made 22 saves in goal to earn the shutout, while Kevin Adam made 35 stops for Salem State.
