Men's Hockey Set To Host NESCAC Quarters

February 21, 2007

The Middlebury College men's hockey team will make its seventh consecutive trip in the NESCAC Tournament when they host Williams in the quarterfinals. The game will take place on Saturday, February 24th at 4:00 p.m. in Kenyon Arena.

It wasn't a typical regular season for Middlebury, but the Panthers have come on strong and are sporting a four-game unbeaten streak as they enter the NESCAC Tournament. The Panthers and Bowdoin both ended the regular season with identical 11-6-2 marks in NESCAC play, with the Polar Bears earning the top seed with a win over Middlebury in January.

Middlebury is now 15-1 overall in NESCAC Tournament play, winning and hosting six of the seven tournaments. The Panthers have also captured eight NCAA titles, from '95-'99 as well as '04-'06.

The Middlebury offense was down a bit this year, but the defense allowed the fewest goals in NESCAC play (2.38/game). The penalty kill was solid as well, killing .857 of its opponent's power plays, tops in the NESCAC.

Mickey Gilchrist leads the Panthers in scoring this season with a team-high 14 goals and 28 points to go along with his 14 assists. The junior leads the team with seven power play and three game-winners this season. Gilchrist now has 106 points in 82 career games.

Tom Maldonado leads the team and ranks third in the league with .92 assists/game. The junior has one goal to go along with his 22 assists this season. Seniors John Sales (8-11-19), Brett Shirreffs (7-6-13) and Evgeny Saidachev (4-8-12) round out the other leading scorers.

Ross Cherry and Doug Raeder have again split time between the pipes this season. Raeder is 9-3 with a 2.49 GAA, while Cherry is 5-4-3 with a 2.26 GAA.

Williams makes its seventh consecutive trip to the NESCAC Tournament. The Ephs are 0-7 overall, falling in the first round each year.

Brandon Jackmuff (11-4-15), Kevin Colwell (5-10-15), Owen Holm (5-8-13), Alex Smigelski (7-5-12) and Brett Haraguchi (6-5-11) lead the Ephs in scoring. Rick Redmond is 3-6-2 with a 3.76 GAA in goal, while Marc Pulde is 5-7 with a 3.09 GAA.
