March 13, 2010

Jared Docking put home his own rebound after a shot from Kyle Taylor had been saved, lifting Plattsburgh to a 3-2 overtime victory in an NCAA Quarterfinal game. The goal was the third of the year for Docking, coming just 3:19 into the extra session. The Cardinals improve to 19-5-4 and will meet Norwich in the semifinals next Friday at Lake Placid. The Panthers end their nine-game winning streak, finishing the season with a 19-5-4 mark. The game was played before a sellout crowd of 2,600 at Middlebury's Kenyon Arena.

Middlebury had a slight advantage in play through the game's first 10 minutes, with the contest knotted at 0-0. The Panthers best chance came at 10:30, as Bryan Curran just missed the far post after the original shot had been saved by Josh Leis.

Plattsburgh took a 1-0 lead at the 10:52 mark, when Kyle Kudroch scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season. Kudroch was behind the Panthers goal, as his pass to the slot hit Middlebury goaltender John Yanchek in the leg and deflected in. The Cardinals had another opportunity on a power play at the 15:00 mark, but Dan Sliasis' shot hit the outside of the post. The period ended with a 1-0 Cardinal lead, as they held an 11-9 shots advantage.

Plattsburgh took a 2-0 lead at 10:09 of the second period, taking advantage of a turnover. Dylan Clarke stole the puck and broke in on Yanchek, as his first shot was saved. The rebound came right back to Clarke, who netted his 12th of the year and team-leading 29th point of the season.

Middlebury got on the board at the 16:06 mark, scoring a four-on-four goal on a rebound. Charlie Strauss' shot from the right wing was saved by Josh Leis, with the rebound coming to Ken Suchoski in the high slot. Suchoski quickly snapped a wrister into the top right corner of the net for his 11th of the season to make it a 2-1 game. The Panthers killed off a 1:30 five-on-three power play late in the period, entering the intermission with a 2-1 deficit.

Both teams had some chances midway through the period, with Yanchek making a big glove save on Andrew Willock at the 10:00 mark. The Cardinals nearly extended their lead a minute later, but Patrick Jobb was unable to finish off his own rebound.

Middlebury earned the equalizer at 12:59 with a power play goal. Charlie Townsend's shot from the left side was saved by Reis, before Jak Knelman pounced on the rebound and scored from the short side, his fourth of the year. Regulation ended with Plattsburgh holding a 29-22 shots advantage.

Leis ended the night with 21 saves in goal to earn the win, while Yanchek made 28 stops for the Panthers. This was the fourth time the teams have played in the NCAA Quarterfinals, with the Cardinals advancing on three of the four occasions.
