Strauss Nominee For Concannon Award
February 15, 2011
Gridiron Club of Greater Boston president Ray Gallant announced today that 16 NCAA Division II/III players are semifinalists for the 11th Joe Concannon Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England playing at the D-II/III level.
This year’s list is comprised of 12 dynamic forwards, two stellar defensemen and two game-stealing goaltenders, including the nation’s top two point getters in Division III. The candidates include eight players from the incredibly competitive NESCAC Conference.
Among those nominees is Middlebury junior Charlie Strauss (Eagle River, Wis.), who leads the team in scoring with 22 points. The junior captain has helped put the Panthers back in the mix this season, with a 7-1-2 mark in their last 10 games. Strauss leads the team in goals with 11, while tying for the team-lead with 11 assists. He also paces the team with four power play tallies in ’10-‘11. Strauss scored eight goals in a seven game stretch earlier this season, helping the Panthers to an 11-6-5 mark, locked in a three-way tie for first place in the NESCAC.
“Without a doubt this season has showcased an incredible level of competition as evidenced by the tight races and surprising game outcomes that have been seen each and every week of the season,” said Gridiron Club Hockey Awards Committee chairman Tim Costello.“This season more than any other has forced the committee to consider many outstanding players in each of the leagues but some unfortunately do not appear as semifinalists. Our committee believes this is as strong group of nominees ever selected for the award. It will take the few games of the regular season and conference tournaments to determine the most worthy player as this year’s recipient of the award.”
The Gridiron Club plans to announce the finalists and winner of the 11th Joe Concannon Award in March, prior to the start of NCAA Frozen Four Tournament play and present the award during the New England Hockey Writers dinner in mid-April.
