Third Period Goals Lift Men's Hockey Past Wesleyan

January 4, 2013

Matt Silcoff scored two third period goals 2:02 apart to lift Middlebury to a 4-3 win at Wesleyan. Next up for the Panthers is a visit to Trinity Saturday, while the Cardinals entertain Williams Saturday as each team completes its NESCAC weekend.

Silcoff gave Middlebury the lead for good at 6:23 of the third period. Putting home a one-timer off a give and go with Evan Neugold, who had spotted Middlebury a 1-0 lead just 1:10 into the first period with his third goal of the campaign, Silcoff then added what proved to be the game-winner at 8:25 with a wrist shot from the left side while Middlebury was on the power play. It was the only power-play goal of the night as the Panthers were 1-6 with the advantage while Wesleyan was 0-2. Neugold ended the game with three points as he also assisted on the final goal by Silcoff.

Silcoff's goals overshadowed an outstanding individual effort by Wesleyan's Keith Buehler, who came through with a hat trick while extending his point-scoring streak to each of the Cardinals' 11 games this season. Buehler twice tied the game, once at 9:27 of the first period and again at 13:05 of the second. His second goal countered the tally by Panther sophomore Robbie Dobrowski with 2:11 left in the first period. Buehler's goal with 5:52 remaining cut the margin to one goal and finished off his hat trick.  Senior Nick Craven had a pair of assists for the Cardinals to push his streak of scoring at least one point to eight games. Wesleyan pulled its keeper Nolan Daley (33 saves) for the final minute but could not get the equalizer.  Junior Nick BonDurant minded the Panther net and posted 28 stops.
