May 16, 2004
5/16/04 - Middlebury outscored Geneseo 8-1 in the second half on its way to a 14-5 win in an NCAA first-round match-up. The Panthers will host Stevens Institute, an 8-4 winner over Springfield, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
The score was tied at one before the Panthers went on a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter. Aaron Herter and David Leach found the back of the net in the first quarter, before Charley Howe scored with a nice feed from Ben Tobey to make it 4-1 with 13:49 left in the second quarter. Geneseo then made a run, scoring three of the game's next four goals. Tim Killoran scored from the outside before Leach netted his second for Middlebury to make it a 5-2 game. Chris Stock cut it to 5-3 driving to the goal before Travis Bortz went the length of the field after a turnover to make it a one-goal game with 2:37 left in the half. Mike Saraceni scored the first of his three goals just 35 seconds later to give the Panthers a 6-4 lead at the break.
Middlebury took control in the second half as Geneseo failed on eight of 15 clearing attempts as the Middlebury pressure was forcing turnovers. Mark Foster scored two of three goals during a 3-0 run, including a great over-the-shoulder shot at the 8:48 mark. Pat Riehlman scored falling to the ground for Geneseo with 5:54 left in the third quarter to make it a 9-5 game. The would be the Blue Knight's final goal of the game as the Panthers scored the game's final five goals to close out the 14-5 win.
Saraceni paced the team with three goals, while Leach had two goals and two assists. David Spennacchio dished out two assists for Geneseo, with five different players scoring goals. Eric Krieger made nine stops for the Panthers, while Andy Howk made nine saves for the blue Knights.
