Men's Lacrosse Headed To NESCAC Final

5/8/04 - Middlebury held <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Amherst scoreless for the game's final 28:25 on its way to a 7-2 win in the NESCAC Semifinals. The Panthers will take on Wesleyan, a 10-9 winner over Tufts, in the NESCAC Championship at noon on Sunday.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead at 10:42 as Mark Foster scored with a nice feed from Mike Saraceni in transition. Amherst tied the game at 5:38 with a goal from Colby Griffith. The Panthers answered just 18 seconds later as Peter Mellen won the face-off and found Saraceni before he returned the pass for Mellen's goal. The lead grew to 3-1 with a man-up goal at 7:31 of the second quarter as Charley Howe converted a feed from Andrew Giordano. Amherst was held scoreless in the second quarter, leaving the Panthers with a 3-1 halftime lead.
The Jeff scored just 1:35 into the second half to cut the lead to 3-2 on a goal from Derek Cherney with a nice dish from Colby Griffith. That would be Amherst's final goal of the game as Middlebury held them scoreless for the final 28:25. Middlebury began its decisive 4-0 run at the 12-minute mark of the third quarter with a goal from Giordano. A great stop from Middlebury goalkeeper Eric Krieger led to a goal from Howe at 8:26, giving Middlebury a 5-2 lead. David Leach found the back of the net at 6:42, before Ben Tobey scored the game's final goal at 3:07 to give Middlebury the 7-2 win.
Krieger ended the day with 10 saves, while Cushing Donelan was stellar for Amherst, making a dozen saves on the afternoon.
