Late Goals Lifts Men's Lax By Amherst

April 10, 2004

4/10/04 - Second-ranked Middlebury survived a battle with Amherst on Kohn Field as the Panthers came away with a 7-6 win in a back-and-forth contest. Middlebury improves to 8-0, while Amherst falls to 6-2 on the season.

Amherst trailed 2-1 before Derek's Cherney's man-up goal and Stephen Williams' tally just 12 seconds later gave them a 3-2 lead at the 5:34 mark. The lead grew to 4-2 at the end of the quarter before Middlebury exploded for four second period goals. Mike Saraceni was in on three of the tallies, scoring the first and third and assisting on Charley Howe's goal with 1:33 left in the half to make it a 6-4 game at the intermission.

Amherst cut the lead to one just 1:38 into the third quarter with a low snap shot from Cherney. The Jeffs tied the game late in the quarter as Cherney found Alex Casertano before he ripped a shot into the net to make it 6-6 with 3:14 left in the quarter. The game remained tied into the fourth quarter, where Middlebury's Eric Krieger made some huge saves to keep the game tied. A pair of nice saves came on two Amherst man-up opportunities at the 10:03 and 8:50 marks of the quarter. Cushing Donelan answered the saves at the 6:00 mark as he stopped Howe with a chest save. With just over four minutes to play Tom O'Connor poked the ball away from an Amherst attacker, giving Middlebury a transition opportunity. Dave Leach found Mark Foster on the left side before he made two nice fakes and buried the game-winner with 4:03 left to play. Amherst had one last chance late in the game, but Chris Hahm's shot hit the side of the net with five seconds left to play.

Foster, Howe and Saraceni led the Middlebury offense with two goals apiece, while Cherney netted a pair for Amherst. Krieger made 13 stops on the day, while Cherney earned 14 saves.
