Men's Lax With Big Win At Gettysburg
March 23, 2004
3/24/04 - (from Gettysburgh Release) - GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Eric Krieger made 17 saves and Mike Saraceni collected five points as second-ranked Middlebury shook off an early 4-0 deficit to beat fourth-ranked Gettysburg 10-8 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday. Krieger, a former All-America goalie, improved to 4-1 all-time against the Bullets (3-1), including victories in the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Division III championship games. Saraceni tallied one goal and all four assists during an 8-1 run that spanned parts of the first three quarters and put the Panthers (4-0) ahead to stay. Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) led Gettysburg with three goals while freshman goalie Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola) recorded 18 saves, posting a career high in that category for the fourth consecutive game. After falling into a 4-0 hole barely seven minutes into the game, Middlebury righted the ship by halftime before taking control with three third-quarter goals in a span of 46 seconds. With the score tied at 5 following Stewart's second goal of the day, Mark Foster put the Panthers ahead to stay with an unassisted goal at the 8:50 mark of the third. Jamie Duke won the ensuing face-off, then finished off a pass from Saraceni to make it 7-5 just 17 seconds after Foster's go-ahead tally. A Bullet penalty on Duke's goal put Middlebury on the man advantage, and the Panthers cashed in 29 seconds later when Saraceni set up Charley Howe. Gettysburg failed to convert a subsequent man-up situation, but Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark's) scored his second goal of the season at 4:57 to pull the home team within 8-6. Minutes later, Middlebury turned to its goalie to change the momentum. Krieger started the crucial sequence with a point-blank save on John O'Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland) and All-America defenseman John West rushed the ground ball out of the Panthers' zone. Mike Murray took West's clearing pass in transition and netted his first goal of the season to make it 9-6 at the end of three periods. The Bullets, however, still had life. Stewart completed his hat trick off a feed from Sean McTernan (Cordlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) with 7:11 left. A win by Campbell Henry (Chapel Hill, NC/Episcopal [VA]) on the ensuing face-off win led to an acrobatic put-back goal by Alec Knight (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) 14 seconds later that cut the deficit to 9-8. Henry won the next face-off, but Kreiger got a piece of McTernan's game-tying attempt following a Gettysburg timeout and Dave Leach netted a key Middlebury insurance goal with 5:30 left. The Panthers offense did the rest, maintaining possession for a majority of the final minutes and allowing the Bullets only two shots in the waning seconds. For half of the first quarter, it appeared that Wednesday would be Gettysburg's day. McTernan and Stewart opened the Bullets' four-goal barrage with scores 64 seconds apart in the game's first three minutes. O'Bannon struck 47 seconds later and Kevin Smith (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) made it 4-0 with his fourth goal of the season just 7 minutes, 5 seconds into the contest. Travis Meyer's unassisted goal with 6:34 left in the first started Middlebury's comeback. Howe tallied a man-up marker to open the second quarter before Foster and Saraceni took turns assisting each other to knot the game at 4. Meyer closed the five-goal burst with another man-up marker, this one off a Saraceni feed with eight minutes left in the half. Entering the game with 14 second-quarter goals in 2004, Gettysburg was held scoreless on only four shots in the second 15 minutes this time around. The Bullets also struggled with their man-up opportunities all afternoon, going 0-for-5 with the extra man. Vaughan has collected 59 saves in his first four collegiate starts, posting ascending save totals of 11, 14, 16 and 18 in those games. He boasts a .656 save percentage on the year. In addition to his four wins against Gettysburg, Krieger has an 8.28 career goals-against average and .598 save percentage against the Bullets. The Panthers have now won four of the all-time series' seven meetings.
