Men's Lax Wins NESCAC Title

5/8/05 - Middlebury won its fifth straight NESCAC Championship (in the five years of the tournament's existence) with a 9-5 win over Wesleyan. The Panthers receive an automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA Championship, the team's eighth straight bid and ninth overall to the tournament. Wesleyan will hope for an at-large bid when the pairings are announced Sunday night.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Trailing 1-0, Mike Hines and Grayson Connors scored for Wesleyan to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead with 47 seconds left in the first quarter. Dave Leach tied the game with 13 seconds left in the corner with a great bounce shot from a tough angle. J.P. Coviello scored the first of his three goals just 1:09 into the second quarter to give Middlebury a 3-2 advantage. A great feed from Mark Foster to John Sales increased the lead to 4-2, before Mike Walsh answered for Wesleyan with a man-up goal to make it a 4-3 Middlebury lead at the half.
Middlebury scored the only two goals of the third quarter, taking a 6-3 lead into the final stanza. Coviello netted his third of the game 1:39 into the fourth quarter, but was answered by Mike Vitulano just 20 seconds later. Chris Meade scored for the Cardinals at the 11:08 mark to cut the lead to 7-5. Aaron Herter gave Middlebury some breathing room with 5:42 left, while Nick Bastis gave the Panthers a comfortable four-goal cushion with 3:12 remaining.
Coviello ended the day with three goals to pace the Middlebury offense, while Bastis added a pair. Five different players scored for Wesleyan on the afternoon. Middlebury's Alex Palmisano was stellar in net for the Panthers, making 17 saves in goal, one off his season high. Charlie Congleton made a dozen stops for Wesleyan.
