May 4, 2005
5/4/05 - Four-time defending NESCAC champion Middlebury College will host the semifinals and finals of the NESCAC Men's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday-Sunday, May 7-8 at Youngman Field in Alumni Stadium on the campus of Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont.
Middlebury, who finished regular season conference play undefeated and 12-1 overall to earn the top seed and a first round bye, will face seventh seed Bates College (4-5 NESCAC, 9-5 overall) in the first semifinal at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Bates lost at Middlebury 17-10 on the last day of the regular season.
In the second semifinal, third seed Amherst (6-3 NESCAC, 11-3 overall) will play fourth seed Wesleyan (5-4 NESCAC, 11-4 overall) at 3:00 p.m. Wesleyan defeated the Jeffs 10-8 in Amherst earlier this season.
In NESCAC first round tournament action, a Bowdoin own goal just seconds into the start of overtime lifted Bates to a 6-5 win. Goalkeeper Paul Kazarian was brilliant in goal for the Bobcats in their victory recording 16 saves while allowing only five Polar Bear goals. Amherst defeated Connecticut College 17-7 on the strength of an 9-0 first half. Alex Casertano and Derek Cherney paced the Jeffs with five goals a piece. Wesleyan narrowly beat Tufts 9-7 behind the superb goaltending of Charlie Congleton. The sophomore keeper made 21 stops as the Cardinals eliminated the Jumbos.
Winners will advance to the championship on Sunday, May 8 at 12:00 p.m. at Middlebury. The NESCAC Champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.
