Men's Lacrosse Hangs On To Defeat Amherst

4/9/05 - Middlebury came back from an early 3-1 deficit to beat <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Amherst 13-12 at Kohn Field. The Jeffs had a man-up advantage with 37 seconds to play in regulation, but a last second shot by Bryan Hiller was stopped by Alex Palmisano to preserve the win. Middlebury is ranked seventh in the latest Division III poll, while Amherst is ranked 16th.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Amherst came out strong, scoring the game's first two goals to take a 2-0 lead with 11:59 left in the first quarter. The fast-paced action continued as the Jeffs put on the pressure and increased their lead to 4-2 later in the quarter. Middlebury punched in the next six goals, led by Jim Cabrera's two scores, to capture the lead late in the second. The half ended with a flurry, as Amherst scored two goals in the final 1:10, including a goal from Andrew Syfu with only three seconds remaining on the clock, to close the gap 8-6 at the half. Middlebury held a 32-12 shots advantage at the intermission.
An evenly played second half saw Amherst trail by no more than three goals, tying the game with 2:12 remaining on a goal from Syfu. With the game still tied at the 1:18 mark, Travis Meyer rolled left and slipped in a shot under the crossbar for the game-winning goal.
Cabrera led Middlebury with four goals, Meyer, Henry Sheehan and Dave Leach had two goals apiece. Amherst's Derek Cherney led all scorers with five goals and two assists, while Chris Hofman chipped in three goals. Alex Palmisano made eight saves in goal to earn the win, while Cushing Donelan made 15 saves for the Lord Jeffs.
