Men's Lacrosse Hangs On To Defeat Bowdoin
April 15, 2006
Middlebury's leading scorer Jim Cabrera scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Panthers' men's lacrosse team to a dramatic 12-11 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon. Middlebury (6-3, 5-1 NESCAC) squandered an eight-goal halftime lead to the Polar Bears (6-4, 3-2) and went 30:45 without scoring before Cabrera's tally.
Middlebury dominated both sides of the field in the opening half, as J.P. Coviello supplied four goals and the Panther defense allowed just three goals to hold an 11-3 edge at intermission. But Bowdoin stormed back into the game on the shoulders of Tom McKinley and Matt Chadwick, who combined for four goals in a six-goal third quarter for Bowdoin that closed the gap to 11-9.
The Polar Bears deadlocked the game just minutes into the final quarter, as tallies from Ford Barker and Ryan Hurd tied the contest with 10:51 to go. Bowdoin had a great chance to score the go-ahead goal with 1:15 to play, but a side-winder from Matt Chadwick rang off the crossbar and the game entered the extra session.
Bowdoin won the face-off and entered into the offensive zone, but the ball was knocked loose by Middlebury's Gabe Wood and recovered by the Panthers. Frank Granara streaked down the right sideline, cut towards the net and found Cabrera on the far post. Cabrera one-timed the feed inside the post for the game-winner at 3:42.
Charlie Legg made seven saves for Bowdoin, while Alex Palmisano stopped eight shots for Middlebury. Coviello and Cabrera had four goals apiece for the Panthers, while Bowdoin was led by three goals and two assists from Tom McKinley and two-goal efforts from Andy Nelson and Matt Chadwick.
