Men's Lax Knocked Off By Springfield

March 29, 2006

Fourth-ranked Middlebury fell to 3-2 on the season as they fell 11-10 on the road at Springfield. Taylor Brown netted a shot off a feed from Brandon Asplundh with a mere five seconds left in regulation as the Pride upset Middlebury 11-10 at Benedum Field.

The game was extremely tight in the first half, as the Pride built a 4-3 lead going into the break with two scores apiece from Asplundh and Pat Cavanaugh. The third quarter was action-packed, with the Panthers outscoring SC, 5-4, to tie the contest at eight apiece going into the fourth and final quarter. Nick Bastis and Jonathan Sisto each scored two goals apiece in the quarter.

In the fourth, Steve Krasco broke the 8-8 tie with an unassisted score with 11:16 remaining in regulation. Middlebury's Mike Stone then tied the score once again with a goal, and after an Asplundh score with 9:29 left, Bastis scored his team-leading fourth goal of the game to tie the score at 10-10 with 7:32 to play.

It appeared Bastis' score would be the last of regulation as neither team was able to muster any offense for the next seven minutes. The Pride converted a clear attempt with just 1:49 left in regulation and then called a timeout with 40 seconds remaining to play. After the timeout, SC worked the ball around, unable to get close to the goal. Finally, with just seconds remaining, Asplundh found Brown approximately 20 yards out as the senior forward fired a shot towards the goal that found the back of the net with exactly five seconds go play.

Bastis ended the day with four goals, while Sisto added a pair. Alex Palmisano made three saves in 52 minutes, while Pete Britt made one stop in eight minutes of action.
