Men's Lax Overwhelms Bates

Middlebury jumped out to a 9-0 lead en route to an 18-7 victory over visiting Bates on Tuesday at Kohn Field. The Panthers improve to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in NESCAC play, while the Bobcats fall to 4-4 on the season and 1-4 in conference action. Middlebury will host Wesleyan this Saturday afternoon, as Bates hosts Colby on Thursday evening.

Seven different Panthers were involved in the early 9-0 run, highlighted by a pair of goals by Tom Petty and Skyler Hopkins. The Bobcats ended a 27:20 scoring drought when Justin Simon scored his first of his team-high three goals with 2:40 left in the second quarter, cutting the Middlebury lead to 9-1. Both teams added a goal later in the second as Middlebury took a 10-2 lead into intermission.

Eleven seconds into the third quarter, Middlebury's Jim Cabrera picked up a groundball to score one of his team-high four goals. At the 14:06 mark, Mike Stone's tally gave the Panthers a 12-2 lead. Bates scored the next two goals, cutting the Panther advantage to 12-4. Middlebury maintained the offensive pressure with a two-goal spurt of their own late in the third before a Bobcat goal by Bryan Frates cut the lead to 14-5. Middlebury outscored Bates in the fourth quarter 4-2, including a goal and an assist by Cabrera setting the final score at 18-7.

Cabrera's four goals led the Panthers, as Stone scored three and Petty, Hopkins, and Bart Witmer each chipped in a pair of goals. Simon led Bates with three goals and an assist, while Frates added a goal and two assists. Alex Palmisano started the game in goal for the Panthers, making eight saves and allowing five goals in 46:30 of action. Pete Britt relieved him early in the fourth quarter, allowing two goals in 11:19 of play. Bill Zrike played the final 2:11 of the game making two saves in net. Bates also played three goalies, with Peter Boston starting the game. Boston gave up nine goals and made seven stops in the first 22:41. Will Paddock played the next 22:19, making three saves and allowing five goals. Tom O'Connor was in net for the fourth quarter making one save and giving up four goals.
