Men's Lax With Key Win At Wesleyan
April 19, 2008
Middlebury earned a huge road win on Saturday, as they topped Wesleyan 11-8. Middlebury, ranked seventh nationally, took over sole possession of first place in the NESCAC as the two teams entered the game tied for first at 6-1. The Panthers also remained undefeated on the road this year with an 8-0 mark. Middlebury will conclude its regular-season slate Sat., April 26, hosting Tufts with a chance to clinch a first-round bye and home field for the NESCAC tournament. Tufts still has a chance to force a two-way tie or three-way tie before the end of the season. Wesleyan, ranked 13th nationally, finishes up at Bates April 26 hoping for a Tufts victory at Middlebury.
Middlebury gave up the first goal in the game, but scored seven of the next nine for a 7-3 lead early in the third quarter. Middlebury never let the Cardinals get closer than two at 10-8 on a Chris Jasinski goal with 8:13 remaining but a goal by Jim Cabrera off his own rebound with 6:24 to go completed his hat-trick and gave the visitors some breathing room at 11-8. Wesleyan's best opportunity in the last five minutes came when Jasinski hit the pipe.
Middlebury broke a 2-2 tie on a Frank Granara goal in front off a terrific centering pass by Pete Smith, who had three assists in the contest. That was the final goal of the first quarter as the team packed five goals into the opening 5:50 of the game. Middlebury extended its lead to 6-3 at halftime with Cabrera, Mike Stone and Chris Teves getting goals, the last with :03 to go, again with a lightening pass from Smith setting it up.
When Stone opened the third-period scoring at 14:12, Middlebury had a four-goal cushion. Wesleyan fought back from as much as a 10-5 deficit with three consecutive goals by juniors Dan Latzman and Russ Follansbee, as well as Jasinski.
