Men's Lacrosse Wins Season-Opener

March 7, 2009

Middlebury overcame a pair of three goal deficits in the first half en route to a 16-13 victory over Bates College at Kohn Field on Saturday. Last season's NESCAC Player of the Year Mike Stone began the 2009 season red-hot, scoring five goals on only six shots, keying the victory. With the win, the fourth-ranked Panthers (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) improve their unbeaten streak against the Bobcats (0-2 overall, 0-1 NESCAC) to 22-0 all-time. Middlebury returns to action, travelling to Wesleyan for a NESCAC tilt next Saturday, while Bates hosts Western New England College in a non-league contest on Wednesday.

Trailing 2-1 in the first quarter, Stone collected a pair of goals, including a man-up tally for a 3-2 lead with 5:52 left. Bates scored the next four goals, all unassisted, taking their first three-goal lead at the 12:02 mark of the second quarter. After trading goals later in the quarter, the Panthers scored two more, capped by a man-up tally by David Hild, cutting the Bobcat lead to 7-6 with 2:43 remaining in the half. Bates responded, netting the next two goals of the game including Rory Cosgrove's third goal of the half, for a 9-6 lead. Matt Ferrer got one back for Middlebury with 42 seconds left in the half, collecting a nice feed from Pete Smith for a doorstep goal.

Middlebury dominated the third quarter, holding the Bobcats scoreless while tacking on four more goals in the quarter. The Panthers tied the game at nine apiece when Tom Petty redirected a cross-crease pass from Skyler Hopkins at the 12:38 mark. With 7:56 left, Stone rocketed a shot from 20 yards out netting the go-ahead goal. Hild capped the third quarter scoring, netting a goal with 7:24 left and opened the fourth, on a spin move and quick shot from in close. Hild's pair gave the Panthers their first three-goal lead of the game at the 14:06 mark of the fourth quarter. With 11:44 remaining, Smith's goal gave Middlebury a 14-10 lead and some breathing room as both teams exchanged the final six goals of the game.

Stone led all scorers with five goals, Smith scored a pair and assisted on three others, Hopkins collected a game-high five assists, as Hild scored four goals for the Panthers. Cosgrove and Tyler Moore each had three goals for Bates, Garrett Kopeski and Nick Sampson each chipped in a pair, while David Barrett scored one and assisted on another. Peter Britt earned the win in goal for Middlebury, stopping 13 shots, allowing 13 goals, while Bates' Adam Scharff allowed 16 goals, stopping seven shots in the loss.
