November 18, 2003

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Four members of the Middlebury College men's soccer team earned All-Conference honors today. Seniors Jason Griffiths (Gauteng, S. Africa) and Pat Saunders (Morristown, N.J.) were both first-team All-NESCAC selections, while junior Nicholas Colacchio (Norwich, Vt.) and first-year player John Sales (Chatham, Ill.) were both named to the second team. The four helped lead the Panthers to a solid 11-3-2 record with a trip to the NESCAC semifinals.

Griffiths earns first-team honors for the second straight season, while Saunders moves up after earning second-team honors a year ago. Colacchio also earned second-team honors as these three players helped lead one of the nation's top defenses. The threesome anchored a defense that opened the '03 season with five consecutive shutouts. They would end the season with 10 total shutouts, while ranking third in the nation and first in the NESCAC with a 0.43 goals against average. Saunders got in on the scoring a bit this season, finding the back of the net twice to go along with an assist, while Griffiths also had a goal.

Sales had a great rookie season from the midfield, and couldn't have been too far behind in the voting for NESCAC rookie of the year honors. The second-team selection led the team in scoring this season with 16 points, while his seven goals tied him for the team-lead. Three of Sales' goals were game-winners.
