Men's Soccer Defeats Bowdoin, On To NESCAC Final

November 5, 2004

11/6/04 - The Middlebury College men's soccer team scored twice in just over 12 minutes to take a 2-0 victory over Bowdoin College in a NESCAC Tournament Semifinal match on Saturday at Williams College. The Panthers (12-2-2) avenge an early season loss to the Polar Bears (10-6-0) and an overtime defeat at the hands of Bowdoin in last year's NESCAC Semifinals. Middlebury will play Williams in the NESCAC Championship game at noon on Sunday. The Panthers and Ephs will meet for the third time for the title, and the first time since '01.

The Panthers scored their first goal shortly before halftime as Derek Cece lobbed a shot into the box that was redirected by a Bowdoin defender and into the left corner of the goal for a 1-0 edge at 40:43.

Middlebury carried the lead through intermission and into the second half, when a great individual play by Kellan Florio doubled the Panther lead.

Florio took a feed from J.B. Gerber at the left of the box and beat two defenders. The senior midfielder ripped a shot just outside the grasp of Bowdoin netminder Nathan Lovitz, making it 2-0 Panthers at 52:54. The Middlebury defense, which allowed just 13 goals in 15 games, bore down for the final 38 minutes to seal the victory.

Craig Hirsch collected his fourth shutout of the season in goal for the Panthers, making six stops. Lovitz made three stops in net for the Polar Bears.
