Men's Soccer Tops Amherst In OT

10/9/04 - David LaRocca converted a pass from John Rusten and scored with a bicycle kick at 4:46 in overtime to give the Panthers a 3-2 victory over third ranked Amherst. The intense battle was fought in front of a huge alumni crowd, gathered to celebrate 50 years of Middlebury College soccer. The Panthers entered the game ranked sixth in New England, while Amherst sat in the third spot.
The scoring began at 5:37 in the first half when Amherst's Mike Wohl netted a pass from Joe Gannon from close range. The Lord Jeffs took a 2-0 lead in the second half when Ben Lavely converted a penalty kick at 55:28. Middlebury remained scoreless until 74:30 when John Rusten notched his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick. With only 30 seconds left in regulation, the Panthers forced the game into overtime when Kellan Florio dribbled in from the left and slid a shot past the goalkeeper.
Craig Hirsh had four saves in goal for Middlebury while Amherst's Greg Lockwood had six.
