Men's Soccer Headed To NESCAC Semi's

11/2/05 - The Middlebury College men's soccer team will make its sixth consecutive trip to the NESCAC semifinals this weekend at Williams College. The Panthers will take on <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Amherst in a semifinal game at 1:30 on Saturday at Williams, while the host school meets Wesleyan at 11:00. The winners meet for the NESCAC Championship at noon on Sunday.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Middlebury won the inaugural title in '00, advancing to the finals in '01 and '04, and the semifinals in '02 and 03. The Panthers enter the tournament with a 10-3-1 overall record and a league-best 0.56 goals against average. Middlebury opened the season with a 7-0 record and a defensive scoreless streak that ran almost 600 minutes. The Panthers then dropped three of four before bouncing back with a 2-0-1 record over their last three games.
Last Sunday, the Panthers picked up a 1-0 win over Tufts in a NESCAC first-round game on Dragone Field. Derek Cece scored the game's lone goal on a penalty kick 7:50 into the contest.
Leading the team in scoring this season is rookie Baer Fisher with five goals and four assists for 14 points. Gabe Wood leads the team in goals with six, followed by Cece with five. In goal, current NESCAC Player of the Week Zack Toth, sports a 0.58 GAA with eight shutouts on the season.
