Men's Soccer Falls To Wesleyan

September 23, 2006

Middlebury suffered its first loss of the season as they fell to defending NESCAC Champion Wesleyan, 2-1. The Panthers move to 5-1 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 4-0.

Wesleyan came out strong in the first 20 minutes of the game, before Middlebury picked up the pace with some scoring opportunities. Baer Fisher had a couple of great chances for Middlebury, but they were denied by Matt Gnall and the Wesleyan defense.

Neither team would score until the 75th minute when Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead. Sam Griswold drove down the right wing, beating his opponent before scoring with a shot to the lower left corner of the goal. Middlebury answered at 83:42 as Casey Ftorek headed in a nice crossing pass from Vandy Shanholt to tie the game at one.

Wesleyan scored the game-winner with just 44 seconds left in regulation as Ross Pemmerl made a quick crossing pass to Jared Ashe, who finished following an indirect kick.

Wesleyan out shot Middlebury 6-3, with Gnall making one save and Middlebury's Zach Toth making three.
