Men's Soccer Defeats Tufts

September 16, 2006

Middlebury scored a pair of quick goals in the second half to open up a 1-0 game on its way to a 4-1 win over Tufts in NESCAC play.

Tufts controlled the tempo early, with Mattia Chason and Dan Jozwiak each having good chances to score in the first 10 minutes. Middlebury's Vandy Shanholt answered the opportunities for the Panthers, but he was denied with a big save by Pat Tonelli. Middlebury broke onto the scoreboard at 29:38 as Winston Rains sent a ball into the middle. Casey Ftorek quickly settled the ball and dodged an opponent before firing a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

The game remained at 1-0 until a rocket from the 18 by John Sales gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead just one minute into the second half. Middlebury had another great chance just a minute later, but Ftorek's shot, after a great feed from Fisher, was denied by Tonelli.

Fisher did give the Panthers some breathing room at 50:19 as he converted on a breakaway. Tufts got on the board at 59:05 as Baer Duker scored after a scramble in the goal crease area, to make it a 3-1 game. David LaRocca ended the scoring for Middlebury as he converted a quick crossing pass from Colin Nangle.

Zach Toth ended the game with three saves to earn the win, while Tonelli made four stops for Tufts.
