Middlebury

Men's Soccer To Open New Field

September 5, 2007

When the Middlebury College men's soccer team opens its season on Saturday, September 8th, they will do so on a brand-new state-of-the-art Field Turf surface. The Panthers will host Connecticut College at 1:30 p.m. in the season-opener for both teams, with an opening ceremony scheduled for halftime.

The new surface will be one of the largest of its kind in New England, with a maximum allowable playing surface of 120 x 80 yards. The surface is essentially a thick carpet that is held in place by rubber and sand in-fill. The combination of materials replicates real grass in terms of speed-of-play, softness and control. It is the same field used for several Under 20 World Cup contests that took place this summer in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

The field will be primarily used by the men's soccer program and will provide a great opportunity for women's soccer in case of inclement weather. In the spring, it will function as a multi-purpose field, likely used by varsity teams as well as intramurals.
