Men's Soccer Drops Road Game At Wesleyan

October 26, 2013

Middlebury saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 1-0 road loss at Wesleyan (7-5-1, 6-3). The Panthers (8-4-1, 5-4-1) slip to fifth place in the NESCAC standings and will have to play a quarterfinal road game next Saturday. Middlebury wraps up its home season this Wednesday when they host Plymouth State at 2:30.

Ben Bratt knocked home a missed save attempt by Middlebury goalie Ethan Collins with 14:33 left in the game to lead Wesleyan to the win. The Cardinal goal came off a direct kick just inside midfield by Omar Bravo. The hard blast went right through the hands of the Panther goalie and was chipped past the line by Bratt when it hit the ground.

Middlebury had the territorial advantage for the majority of the first half, out shooting the Cardinals 5-3. Adam Glaser was a tough man for Wesleyan to mark in the period, accounting for four of the five Panther shots.

Middlebury nearly took the lead seven minutes into the second half when Tyler Smith headed the ball right in front of the goal, but Cardinal keeper Emmett McConnell cut off the lower left corner and made the save.

Less than a minute later, Bravo had a chance to put Wesleyan ahead with a blast from about eight yards away that Collins was able to stop.

McConnell finished the game with four saves for the Cardinals, registering his fifth shutout of the year. Collins had five saves for the visiting Panthers.
