Men's Tennis To Defend NESCAC Title

4/20/05 - The Middlebury College men's tennis team will take part in the 2005 NESCAC Men's Tennis Championship Friday, April 22nd through Sunday April 24th at Amherst College.

Defending NESCAC and NCAA Division III Champion Middlebury, who has not lost to a Division III opponent this season posting a 13-0 mark which includes seven wins against NESCAC teams, will seek their second NESCAC title. Williams had captured the previous 11conference titles and three NCAA crowns during the past six years.

The tournament features six conference teams ranked nationally in the April 15th Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rankings. Top-ranked Middlebury, Williams (6th nationally), and Bowdoin (15th nationally) lead a group of six NESCAC teams atop the East Regional rankings. Bates, Amherst and Trinity are listed fourth through sixth respectively with Tufts and Colby among the top 15 regionally.

Bates junior William Boe-Wiegaard has won the #1 singles flight title each of the past two season. He will be challenged by top ranked Brian Waldron of Middlebury, Mac Burke of Bowdoin, Trinity's Brian Marsden and Amherst's Josh Rilla. Eleven NESCAC singles players are ranked among the top 13 in the region.

Amherst juniors Josh Rilla and Danny Babkes will attempt to defend their top flight double title. The duo are one of eight NESCAC teams ranked in the top nine regionally. The Williams tandem of Jeff Kivitz and Scott MacKenzie are the top-ranked team in the region.

The flighted tournament gets underway at noon on Friday at the Amherst Tennis Courts. Play will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. There will be six singles flights and three doubles flights which will score toward the team championship.
